The United States' continued leadership in the global clean energy race is not assured: to reach our national energy, climate, security, and competitiveness goals, we need to be able to translate lab bench R&D into market-ready solutions as quickly as possible. The cycle of innovation and deployment is connected, interdependent, and mutually reinforcing -- but without aggressive commitment to both, we risk falling behind. To speed up this cycle, we need to (1) break down our siloed approach to technological development, (2) understand what has greatest potential for tech AND market readiness, and (3) have more nimble and flexible sources of financial and educational support for innovators who are on the path to commercialization. Today Breakthrough Energy has released our proposal for a new "Fast Track" program at the Department of Energy to do just this. I'm excited for this groundbreaking work to shape the conversation about what we can do next to ensure the United States continues to be a leader in the next generation of clean energy solutions. Kudos to Adria Wilson, Ph.D. Farah Benahmed Tori Fessenden for their amazing work developing this proposal, and a huge thanks to our many partners who contributed valuable feedback!
