The doors are opening to more affordable apartments in the Pacific Northwest! BRIDGE celebrated the grand opening of a beautiful new affordable housing community yesterday in Beaverton, Oregon. Altura provides 75 apartments up to 3 bedrooms in size in Beaverton’s growing South Cooper Mountain neighborhood. Several units include features for residents with mobility, visibility, and hearing impairments or disabilities. Impact NW, a nonprofit that has served the Greater Portland area since 1966, is providing robust resident services. Chief Real Estate Officer Sierra Atilano and the BRIDGE team was thrilled to cut the ribbon with Washington County Board of Commissioners Chair Kathryn Harrington, Beaverton Mayor Lacey Beaty, Metro Councilor Gerritt Rosenthal, and many others. BRIDGE now has more than 700 housing units in Washington County and more than 1,900 units in the Portland metropolitan area. Special thanks to our partners: Oregon Housing & Community Services (OHCS), Washington County, Oregon's Metro Regional Affordable Housing Bond, City of Beaverton, KeyBank, Energy Trust of Oregon, Impact NW, Salazar Architect Inc., and Colas Construction.

What a fantastic day as BRIDGE joined our partners to break ground yesterday on a new 234-unit affordable housing community in Bellevue, Wash.! The festive event included elected officials, leaders from project supporter Amazon, and many others to celebrate the transit-oriented community in Bellevue’s Spring District, next to a Sound Transit light rail station. The community will include two mid-rise buildings with a range of amenities, all affordable to those earning 60% or less of Area Median Income, with 40 units reserved for those with developmental disabilities. It’s located near high-tech employers, great public schools, and more. BRIDGE now has more than 1,000 affordable apartments open or in development in Greater Seattle. Thank you to Gov. Bob Ferguson, Bellevue Mayor Dr. Lynne Robinson, King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci, David Zapolsky of Amazon, Kelly Rider of King County, Lindsay Masters and many others. Huge thanks also to Washington State Department of Commerce, King County, WA, City of Bellevue, Washington, Sound Transit, ARCH, Citi, JLL, National Affordable Housing Trust (NAHT), Wellspring Family Services, Open Doors For Multicultural Families , GGLO Design, Exxel Pacific, and Avenue5 Residential. We'll see you at the Grand Opening!

As Black History Month continues, we honor the storied community of Altadena, California that was devastated by the recent LA-area wildfires. At a time when red-lining put many areas off-limits, Altadena was one of the few areas where Black families could buy homes and join the middle class. Black businesses and social life thrived along Lake Avenue, before the area’s Black population began declining in the 1990s. The Eaton fire destroyed much of Altadena and killed 17 people. A recent UCLA study found that Black residents were more likely to have homes damaged or destroyed, and that Black homeowners were more likely to be older and financially burdened. “I try to stay focused and not so much look back at what was,” said one 68-year-old resident who lost her home. “I want to look at what is to come.”

We are excited to announce that construction has begun of 440 Arden Way, a beautiful transit-oriented housing community that will bring 124 affordable apartments to the heart of North Sacramento. Located in the Woodlake neighborhood, 440 Arden Way will be a family-friendly community with apartments up to three bedrooms in size and a large ground-floor childcare space. It will include 31 apartments for those who have previously experienced homelessness, and offer a range of resident services provided by Lutheran Social Services. This project will expand BRIDGE’s presence in the Sacramento area, where we already have more than 200 apartments. 440 Arden Way is scheduled to begin welcoming residents next year! We’d like to thank our incredible partners and supporters for making this project possible. They include the California Department of Housing & Community Development, California Department of General Services, City of Sacramento and Former Mayor Darrell Steinberg, U.S. Bank, JPMorganChase, Walker & Dunlop, Freddie Mac, Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, California Municipal Finance Authority, San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission , Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT), Lutheran Social Services, Sacramento Steps Forward and many others.

In recognition of #BlackHistoryMonth, we are celebrating people who inspire us. Today we honor William Nickerson Jr., a trailblazing businessman and entrepreneur whose small life insurance business in Los Angeles would grow to become one of the largest Black-owned businesses in the Western United States. Founded in 1925, Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company created meaningful economic opportunities for Black families often denied coverage by traditional insurance firms. Nickerson’s business brought financial empowerment to Black communities nationwide, while creating thousands of jobs for Black professionals amid intense discrimination. Nickerson's name lives on today. One of the largest public housing communities in the United States, Nickerson Gardens in Watts, is named in his honor.
