World Stroke Day is Oct. 29. Stroke can be a disabling event and affects nearly 800,000 people in the U.S. each year. The most common risk factors for a stroke are high blood pressure, smoking and uncontrolled diabetes. In addition to sudden severe headache, the most common symptoms of stroke can easily be remembered by the letters BE FAST. Don’t delay. The faster you get to a hospital, the sooner you can get treatment or medication to reverse stroke’s effects. http://ynh.care/jS

The Park Avenue Ambulatory Surgery Center participated in an annual healthcare career program that invited Trumbull High School seniors to experience a snapshot of healthcare careers available at PAMC. Specifically, the students got an up-close look at the operating room. Through immersive “mock-up sessions,” students suited up alongside skilled nurses and surgical techs to witness a mock operating procedure. They observed how patients were set up in a sterile environment for surgery and engaged with professionals in a relaxed, interactive and informative setting. The unique opportunity sparked curiosity, and students asked questions to learn more about the team who works in an operating room. As healthcare organizations face a growing shortage of operating room workers, initiatives like this aim to inspire the next generation at a pivotal time when students begin to consider their futures. PAMC has already seen success with the program, with several students returning as volunteers and expressing interest in pursuing jobs in the operating room.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. CT Buzz reporter Jillian Andrews spoke with Allison Vallance, MA, BSN, a breast cancer patient who ended up joining the team at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Trumbull. Vallance was only 37 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “It was on my very first mammogram and I had gotten early screenings because I had a family history. It was unfortunate that the results of the mammogram required me to have a biopsy, biopsy came back with breast cancer,” Vallance said. http://ynh.care/jj
