On Tuesday, MOCS’ Director Lisa M. Flores was in attendance for Brooklyn District Attorney's Office DA Eric Gonzalez's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at the New York City College of Technology. The event showcased different Hispanic cultures, with a performance by "@Drums and Bugles International Band Association" from Panama. Director Flores would like to give a special thanks to News 12 Anchor Nadia Galindo for being an amazing Mistress of Ceremonies and Eric Gonzalez for hosting this wonderful night honoring Hispanic excellence! #hispanicheritagemonth

This October, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office marked a number of notable events. The CRU moved for its 40th exoneration just after #WrongfulConvictionDay. And October 9 marks the eighth anniversary of the passing of the great Ken Thompson. Brooklyn’s first black District Attorney was a trailblazer for criminal justice reform. From correcting wrongful convictions to fighting gun violence, the work of this office continues to carry his legacy—it is a reminder that justice does not end with a conviction and the enormous responsibility carried in the work we do.
Last night, I had the privilege of talking with attendees about the challenges of exonerating the wrongfully convicted at the Wrongful Conviction Day event hosted by Families & Friends of the Wrongfully Convicted at the Prince Joshua Avitto Community Center in East New York. We had a robust and honest discussion about the challenges facing the City’s Conviction Review Units, and the frustrations of those in the Innocence Community who, understandably, feel that their voices aren’t being heard. I was proud to represent the work of the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office CRU under the pioneering leadership of District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, which today recorded its 40th exoneration over the decade it’s been in existence. As I said last night, understanding how CRUs work, and the challenges CRUs face accomplishing the things we are intent on accomplishing, can be helpful to those trying to navigate post-conviction justice pathways. I hope to be invited to participate in many more of these events, so I can continue to promote the model we’ve developed in Brooklyn, which I am confident is the best way forward. Following up on that event with our exoneration today—the 40th for Brooklyn CRU—was a really special moment. As everyone on here knows, as Brooklyn CRU Chief I’m proud to have overseen the exoneration of a dozen men over the past two and a half years and to have seen the total exonerations in Brooklyn reach the 40-person mark on my watch. Eric Gonazalez’s approach to this work—recognizing that admitting and correcting mistakes of the past, and doing the hard work to prevent those same mistakes going forward—is critical to his Public Safety mandate, and I’m proud to be charged with translating his vision into action. Huge congratulations to Emily Farber, Leonard Noisette, and, most importantly, to Keith Roberts for getting this one across the line!

Thank you to our incredible hosts in Norway and ROSA Stop Human Trafficking for the opportunity to share how the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office fights human trafficking alongside our law enforcement and outreach partners. Meaningful exchanges with international leaders and teams strengthen our efforts in New York and beyond.
Chief | Human Trafficking Unit | Kings County (Brooklyn) District Attorneys Office | Brooklyn Human Trafficking Task Force Co-Chair
Spent a busy but impactful week here in Norway. Was able to present and highlight how our unit, and the Brooklyn Human Trafficking Task Force, operate to combat human trafficking at the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. I also had the opportunity today to meet with Julie Platou Kvammen and discuss strategy with some great investigators and prosecutors from Kripos and Oslo politidistrikt. Ended the day meeting with Hadia Tajik, Representative from Rogaland and the deputy leader of the Committee of Justice in the Norwegian Parliament. Thank you for taking the time to meet with us at the Parliament to discuss this important issue. Thank you to ROSA Stop Human Trafficking and Leila Langdalen for the invitation to present. Your conference had very insightful topics. I was even able to get in a quick visit to the site of the Lillehammer Olympic Ski jump! #collaboration #forcedlabor #endhumantrafficking
