Call for Presentations is now live for BSidesSF 2025 in SF!

We are BACK for BSidesSF 2025! Julia K. and I are co-chairing the program this year, with Julia running CFP operations and myself handling program scheduling and run-of-show (but both overseeing content). Our theme this year is “Here be Dragons”. ;) We aim to hear your thoughts and perspectives on what’s lurking in the security/threat “shadows” ;) and how we should be solving them. As a reminder we are a security-practitioner focussed conference. This usually means, we want to hear from predominantly individual contributors who have identified and fixed security problems at their companies. We want to see clear completed actions and results, and of course, lessons you’ve learnt that you’re willing to share with your peers. We DON’T prioritize just novel ideas; in security it’s still worth talking about what is tried and true, or what is boring but Just Works. We’ve also increased our theme list in an effort to hear more kinds of content that we haven’t heard a ton of in the past; that includes: security history/lore (here definitely be dragons), intros/SoKs, security lifecycle (security program management), etc. Every year we get inundated with interest; in 2024 we received 334 reviewable submissions so we ended up with an unusually selective 17.9% acceptance rate. So the CFP submission deadline is moved earlier to allow our 100% volunteer-run committee to review everything on time. Our CFP process is double blind; this is to allow for new and upcoming presenters a chance to get on stage. SO GET YER SUBMISSIONS IN ASAP IF YOU WANT A CHANCE TO BE IN THE 2025 PROGRAM. (We are also exploring other changes to see how we can accommodate more content for all our participants; we heard loud and clear that many tracks filled up quickly and there was not enough seating across the board). #bsidessf2025 #bsidessf #security #cybersecurity #privacy #cfp #infosec #bsides #conference

I had a fantastic time speaking about building cybersecurity products customers love at BSidesNYC last weekend. A huge shoutout to Huxley Barbee Chris Kirsch Justin Massey and all other organizers, CFP reviewers, volunteers, and sponsors that made this event a success! I am hoping that other BSides events will borrow this awesome idea of having an Entrepreneurship track (I am looking at you BSidesSF Seattle Bsides Security Conference Security BSides Las Vegas and others 😉 ).

Service-as-a-Software Another type of SaaS Back in July I shared a talk from Chenxi Wang, Ph.D. from BSidesSF where she stated: "Today we have a $200Bn global market spend on cybersecurity, $100Bn of that is professional services, and we believe about 80-90% of that could be automated by AI" At the time, I thought the claim was skeptical, even being bullish on AI myself. However, since that time, AI has continued to evolve, and recently Sequoia Capital published a piece called "Generate AI's Act o1: The Agentic Reasoning Era Begins" In the article they discuss OpenAI's o1 model, and the role of reasoning capabilities of models using inference-time compute They lay out how SaaS was a $350Bn opportunity and continues to grow but the services market is measured in 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 They make the case that thanks to agentic reasoning, AI will enable Service-as-a-Software, where labor can be turned into software and the total addressable market for services is exponentially larger than software. While a lot remains to be seen with agentic reasoning and models, it is clear that there is a significant interest and potential to fundamentally change the way work is done when it comes to the digital domain and business.
