Great article from Coby L. (via Noah Smith's equally great substack) on why its so hard to achieve something most advocates and politicians agree on: more small developers building small projects. It's a very interesting, thorough overview of the structural impediments small builders face! https://lnkd.in/dxTdjJus "The cities of our dreams were not built by institutions, but by industrious, proud, maverick developers who came in all shapes and sizes. Neighborhoods felt neighborhoodly because the mom and pops who built and owned the buildings lived close by. They had a vested interest in making them as good and welcoming as possible."

"Many former Bay Area residents left the state entirely, moving to cheaper metros in Texas, Idaho and other Western states. Others moved further inland in search of affordable housing and more space, often to California’s hot Central Valley or to the fire-prone foothills of the Sierra Nevada." https://lnkd.in/dK-6iM2j

Excellent new article from Liam Dillon at the Los Angeles Times on the City of L.A.'s blueprint for future housing growth. Unfortunately, as Mahdi Abbas Manji of the Inner City Law Center notes, the City plan repeats housing patterns that prioritize wealthier residents at the expense of communities of color: "The argument is that the majority of the residents need to accept a greater disruption to their lives so the minority of residents, who are disproportionately wealthier and whiter, can continue to keep their neighborhood as it is.” https://lnkd.in/gnPR8Hyj
Los Angeles has to rezone the entire city. Why are officials protecting single-family-home neighborhoods?
