Six months ago, I had the honor of meeting Carlene Davis and am thrilled to be able to work with her on addressing the health inequities older adults experience. This Black History Month, I stand with my colleagues at The SCAN Foundation (TSF) to celebrate Carlene Davis, MPA, vice president of strategy and evaluation for the California Black Women’s Health Project, 2017 fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leaders program, co-founder of Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance, and the director of the Sankofa Village Storytelling Project. Throughout her life and career, Carlene has been a persistent champion of elevating the voices and lived experiences of adults as they age — to celebrate their unique identities and vital contributions, and to place their voices at the heart of how we ensure all adults can age well at home with purpose. Historically, systemic inequities have permeated our national systems of care and supports for older adults, and the voices, perspectives, and lived experiences of these vital members of our communities have been excluded from healthcare datasets and conversations designed to better understand and address these inequities. We celebrate Black leaders like Carlene who are working to change that. Carlene is one of four TSF grantees who will form Equity Community Organizing Groups (ECO Groups) to center these voices in building a more inclusive and equitable system of care and supports for older adults. Outside of her work with the California Black Women’s Health Project, Carlene is the co-founder of Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance and the director of the Sankofa Village Storytelling Project, which lifts up and honors Black women as they age. The project aims to learn from the experiences of older Black women so that they can share their wisdom and legacy with the world. This International Women's Day we take a moment to reflect on the continued health disparities Black women face here in California and nationally and why discussions today that center intersectionality and call out our unique experiences with healthcare are so crucial. Black women and girls still face persistent health disparities and inequities including but not limited to: - Lack of access to quality healthcare - Lack of culturally congruent care - Gross disparities in maternal and reproductive healthcare - Higher instances of chronic illness often due to social determinants - Higher rates of medical debt - Elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and isolation with inadequate access to culturally competent providers and mental health services CALIFORNIA BLACK WOMEN'S HEALTH PROJECT has dedicated 30 years to advocating for the health and well-being of Black women and girls. #CABWHP Director of Maternal and Reproductive Health, Raena Granberry, was recently interviewed by @LiveNOWFox (FOX https://lnkd.in/dn_2GbuG) about the medical challenges faced by Black women. Raena noted the continuous need to acknowledge and fight against medical racism to improve health outcomes for Black women who are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, lupus, and who experience the highest maternal mortality rate. Whether it's Black History Month or any other month, it's important to continue to elevate conversations around health disparities and the role social determinants of health have in our health outcomes.
