Thank you to all our activists who came out to speak on the harmful consequences of the Kern County Carbon TerraVault project. Carbon capture projects pose significant harms and risks to our communities and the Kern County Board of supervisors just approved one. Take if from Brianda Castro, Climate and Environmental Justice Associate at the Central California Asthma Collaborative, who highlighted the severe consequences these communities face in her testimony—“Kern County’s communities have been burdened by poor air quality and high rates of respiratory illnesses for years, and this carbon capture project threatens to make those conditions even worse”. Listen to her whole testimony now.

About us
The mission of the Central California Asthma Collaborative (CCAC) is to develop a network of stakeholders who work in a regional capacity to improve the health and quality of life for San Joaquin Valley residents affected by asthma and other respiratory conditions. Together we are working reduce the burden of asthma in the Central Valley. CCAC is also pursuing opportunities to increase Valley resources and establish long-term stability for the Collaborative and for individual county Asthma Coalitions by leading local fundraising efforts and pursuing regional grant funding. CCAC is working on the development and implementation of multi-component child asthma education and intervention programs, with an emphasis on developing partnerships with schools and parent organizations in underserved communities throughout the San Joaquin Valley. CCAC is also fostering and promoting the collection and dissemination of relevant asthma-related resources to CCAC-affiliated organizations and the public at large. CCAC continues its efforts in developing culturally appropriate health delivery tools and educational programs with an emphasis on the relationship between asthma and Valley air quality. CCAC tracks current asthma research to further the awareness and prevention of respiratory health disparities in the San Joaquin Valley. CCAC participates in regional research opportunities, including projects designed to (a) identify environmental factors and interventions to address the high rates of childhood asthma morbidity in the Central San Joaquin Valley, (b) identify barriers and solutions to improve access to health services for under-insured residents. CCAC also facilitates the implementation of a database registry utilizing innovative technologies for the collection and exchange of health and environmental information to better inform physicians and improve the quality of care for asthma patients throughout the region.

As we celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth, we celebrate our amazing diverse team! One of our most seasoned members is Graciela Anaya, our Director of Community Health. Here's an extra special spotlight for Graciela to share about her culture and the work she does! "As a first generation Mexican in the US, I see firsthand the distrust in healthcare within my culture and community. This has motivated me to not only learn more about health and how I can be a bridge between my community and the health care system; but how I can tailor health care in a way that fits my community's needs."

The Latino culture is extremely diverse, and there is no singular Latino experience. The identities of Latinas and Latinos are filled with many layers, shaped by factors such as geography, heritage, race, and gender. Latinas and Latinos have spent centuries expressing and preserving these identities, which have all contributed to the culture of the United States. #HispanicHeritageMonth
