🗓 Los Angeles County is home to more than 75,000 unhoused people -- more than two-thirds of whom live on the street, according to the county's point-in-time count data. Measure A is supposed to help change that by raising taxes on certain items sold in the county. What exactly would this measure do, and could it make a dent in the problem? Join us for a free, in-person panel discussion with experts who can help us dig into this issue. This panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, October 9th, from 12:00pm — 1:00pm at Studio MLA. A networking session with free lunch will take place from 11:30am — 12:00pm for attendees and panelists. Our moderator: Marisa Kendall, who covers California's homelessness crisis for CalMatters Our panelists: Lance Christensen, VP of Education Policy and Government Affairs at California Policy Center Tommy Newman, VP of Public Affairs and Activation at the United Way of Greater Los Angeles Cheri Todoroff, Exec. Dir. of the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative Shawn Morrissey, VP of Advocacy and Community Engagement for Union Station Homeless Services Thank you to our sponsor California Community Foundation, as well as our convening partners Center for Nonprofit Management & SoCal Grantmakers

Teresa, a small business owner, is a testament to the power of community support. Struggling to keep her ice cream truck running during the pandemic, a grant from Pacoima Beautiful’s Socially Organized Leaders Institute helped her repair it and return to business. As part of the CCF-funded Recovery Hub, Pacoima Beautiful has distributed $235,500 to local organizations and small businesses, helping people like Teresa rebuild and thrive. This Latino Heritage Month, CCF celebrates the resilience of the Latino community and the efforts driving recovery in the NESFV. With just 35 days until the election, #CCF convened a cross-section of its community partners for a powerful day of learning and collaboration at an all day Civic Engagement Convening. Together, we explored key ballot issues, discussed practical strategies and barriers to advancing progress in every corner of Los Angeles County, learned more about the significance of storytelling, and ways we can deepen our partnerships in the civic engagement space. The day highlighted the critical role frontline organizations play in advancing policies that help communities thrive and the responsibility funders have to ensure community leaders have the resources they need to be successful. This is just one way CCF is #PoweringChange in Los Angeles!

As we honor the contributions of Latino communities, we reflect on their powerful role in shaping the social, cultural, and economic fabric of Los Angeles. With nearly 50% of LA County residents identifying as Latino, this month highlights both the vibrant impact and the challenges these communities continue to face, especially post-pandemic. "Latino Heritage Month is a time to celebrate, but also to recognize the ongoing work needed to build equity and ensure every family can thrive," – Miguel A. Santana, President & CEO, California Community Foundation. Together, we’re creating opportunities and building resilience for a stronger, more equitable future. #LatinoHeritageMonth #BuildingEquity #CommunityResilience #CCF #LA
