The vast depths of the ocean, teeming with mysterious animals and unknown phenomena, remain one of the least explored environments on Earth. Though much is left to be understood about the ocean, its processes, and inhabitants, the groundbreaking work of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) has been revealing new insights and discoveries since 1987. Since it was founded by David Packard, MBARI has remained an institution that is core to our legacy. It was born from David’s belief that addressing the unique challenges of ocean exploration required a new type of research institute—one that was independent in spirit and collaborative by design. Dive in and explore MBARI’s innovation beneath the waves and inspiration on the shore! 🌊 #Packard60 ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g-69yDK7

What are the Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering? 🔬 We're glad you asked! The Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering provide the nation’s most promising early-career scientists and engineers with flexible funding to take risks and explore new frontiers in their fields of study. Each year, the Foundation selects 20 Fellows from 50 invited institutions to receive individual grants of $875,000, distributed over five years. We will meet this year's fellows in October! In the spirit of Lucile’s belief that the hospital should center the experience of children, the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford design is focused on creating a calm setting that puts children more at ease. 🤝 Low countertops at nurses stations foster interaction between children and care teams. 📺 TV screens in rooms show medical workers as they enter the room so that children and parents can understand who is visiting them and why. 🐱 The main lobby and hallways are laid out with an easy, fun, and educational wayfinding system, featuring textured animal footprints, special animal ambassadors assigned to each floor, and interactive sculptures. Then ➡️ Now At HP, David Packard and Bill Hewlett created a long-standing tradition of an annual picnic. At the Foundation, David and Lucile Packard continued that tradition as a way for Foundation staff and their families to come together and build community. Today, this tradition lives on at the Foundation! Each summer our staff and trustees, along with family and friends, come together to celebrate our work and community. #Packard60

Exciting news! Long-sought after land recognition has been officially declared for several Indigenous groups in Southwest Papua in Indonesia. Official recognition of land rights is critical for Indigenous peoples to be able to safeguard their forests, rivers, and biodiversity. Together with our partners at the Climate and Land Use Alliance and other donors, we are supporting a philanthropic initiative called Forests, People, Climate that partners with funders and civil society organizations to end and reverse deforestation in tropical forests. Congratulations to Rodrigo Botero Garcia, founder and director of the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (FCDS), for receiving the 2024 Bright Award for Environmental Sustainability! 👏 We support FCDS as they work to end deforestation and promote sustainable development and equitable living for local communities and Indigenous populations in the Amazon.
Congratulations to Rodrigo Botero Garcia, an environmental activist and advocate for indigenous land rights in Colombia, the 2024 winner of the Bright Award for Environmental Sustainability. Garcia’s work aims to help preserve large swaths of land while advocating for local communities and indigenous land rights and negotiating with entities who seek to exploit the Amazonian region. Celebrating a lasting legacy for ocean exploration! 🎉 From discovering new species of deep-sea jellyfish to revealing the intricate connections between fish migration and the carbon cycle, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s (MBARI) contributions have been invaluable in advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Since it was founded in 1987 by David Packard, MBARI has remained an institution that is core to The David and Lucile Packard Foundation's legacy. It was born from David’s belief that addressing the unique challenges of ocean exploration required a new type of research institute—one that was independent in spirit and collaborative by design. Inclusive collaboration and listening deeply to diverse perspectives are at the heart of our approach to working with grantees. As part of fulfilling our commitment to listening and learning, we periodically ask grantees to share their experiences working with us through the Grantee Perception Survey administered by the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP). Learn more about our findings and the commitments we are making based on this feedback. ⬇️
