Cancer Free Economy
Non-profit Organizations
A collaborative network of diverse teams, allies, experts & stakeholders working together for a cancer-free economy.
About us
See our Link Tree for links to our latest projects https://linktr.ee/cancerfreeeconomy Our Vision The Cancer Free Economy (CFE) is a network cultivating an inclusive movement to promote healthy environments where no one gets sick because of toxic chemicals where they live, learn, work, and play. We believe that cancer is an all-too-common diagnosis that devastates families and communities, for which a key opportunity for prevention has been largely left on the sidelines: hazardous chemicals in the water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the products we use. We believe everyone’s health matters, and that the most effective change comes from a holistic approach that engages new voices and strengthens existing movements. Our History Since 2014, the Cancer Free Economy has built a dynamic collaborative network among a diverse set of teams and stakeholders working together to accelerate progress towards a healthy, regenerative economy. Today, CFE’s growing membership includes some 60 organizations and leaders, who have come together to pursue a deliberately audacious goal: "Within our generation, we will lift the burden of cancers and other diseases by driving a dramatic and equitable transition from toxic substances in our lives, communities, and economy to safe and healthy alternatives for all." How We Work Our strategies are derived from an in-depth multi-year process to analyze the “system” that has created an economy that depends on hazardous chemicals. This process gave us strategic insights and built a spectrum of productive, on-going relationships with a common goal—to lift the burden of cancer within a generation—and a shared understanding of how to achieve that goal effectively. The network is organized into working groups, teams that address different strategic pathways to a safer materials economy including: Building Power, Health & Science, Shifting the Market, and Policy & Legal.

#Cancer-causing chemicals like #pesticides can also cause significant harm to unborn babies. Thanks to CFE member American Sustainable Business Network for sharing the latest win for public health protection from US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)!
🌱 BREAKING NEWS! ASBN commends USEPA for its action today in halting the use of the toxic pesticide DCPA. This emergency order addresses significant health risks, particularly for unborn babies. Research indicates that exposure can lead to altered fetal thyroid hormone levels, which are associated with low birth weight and potentially irreversible developmental issues, including decreased IQ and impaired motor skills. Read EPA’s release: https://bit.ly/3WyAt3q 👩🌾 Mily Treviño Sauceda, Executive Director of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas – a fellow Rural Coalition member– emphasized the importance of this decision, saying, “...This emergency decision is a great first step that we hope will be part of a series of actions focused on listening to farmworkers, protecting our reproductive health, and safeguarding our families.” Her words highlight the critical need for policies that prioritize health and well-being in agricultural communities. 🏞️ While this decision is commendable, it must be the beginning of broader reforms. Continued engagement with farmworkers and communities is essential to create effective policies that protect both health and livelihoods. We must advocate for safer agricultural practices that prevent harmful exposures and promote public health as #GoodforBusiness. 🌍 Find out more about the movement for regenerative agriculture at ASBN and Forum for the Future’s upcoming webinar on August 21! As #PlasticFreeJuly comes to a close, let's remember that we don't just have a #plastics problem - we have a single-use problem. In today’s fast-paced world, we are often eating on the go or rushing from one place to the next and it is no surprise to see how we’ve become dependent upon disposable products. It has been well-documented that single-use plastic food packaging–derived from petroleum and further worsening the ongoing climate crisis–can harm human health as well as the environment. More people are increasingly aware and concerned about plastic’s connection to petrochemicals, the lack of plastic recycling, the false narrative about so-called "chemical recycling”, as well as increased research about the toxicity and prevalence of #microplastics. And finally, more people are starting to recognize the undisclosed and unknown number of chemicals that are used to make these everyday plastic products that we’re serving, storing and sometimes heating our food in. It’s encouraging to see the growing movement to phase out and cut production of single-use plastic. Early policy efforts are focused on banning single-use plastic straws or plastic bags, and the Biden-Harris Administration's newly announced plastic pollution strategy includes a government procurement phase-out of single-use plastics in food service operations and events by 2027, and in all government operations by 2035. This is all great progress but if we really want to tackle the larger systemic issue of our throwaway culture, we need to be cautious around jumping from single-use plastic over to other single-use options such as aluminum and especially paper or plant-based products. As we successfully decrease our use of harmful plastics, it is important for us to carefully think about the best long-term solution and where we should be heading - to avoid jumping from one problem to another. Learn more about this issue. Great blog from CEH's Green & Clean Procurement Director Sue Chiang: https://lnkd.in/gtfkdwhh

“We should be eliminating PFAS from all products, but particularly pesticides because you’re spraying them on crops, and there’s not a more direct way to expose the population than that.” New study raises health concerns because of the persistence of PFAS in the environment and the potential to contaminate food and drinking water supplies: https://lnkd.in/e2FNpwEU https://lnkd.in/gHqT4SNN

🗳️ Democracy is vital for business! Today marks the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing. In 1987, Lewis was voted as the U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district and remained until his passing in 2020. 💼 ASBN’s Business for Democracy group has long supported the call for Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to strengthen legal protections against discriminatory voting policies and practices, guaranteeing equal access to the ballot. See our page on voting reforms: https://lnkd.in/eJnUKSAM Today, many organizations have come together for the John Lewis Day of Commemoration and Action, with over 85 events planned nationwide. 🇺🇸 🗽Join ASBN and others today in honoring John Lewis and calling on Congress to advance federal legislation to protect our democracy! A cancer-free economy relies on regulatory agencies to be able to regulate businesses. We're happy to see CFE members like American Sustainable Business Network sharing guidance on recent alarming #SCOTUS decisions.
🚨#SCOTUS Ruling Strikes Down 40 Years of Regulatory Predictability Small Businesses Rely On 🚨 Read ASBN’s Statement: https://bit.ly/3zrtelS Friday’s Supreme Court decision overturning the Chevron doctrine is a significant setback for American small businesses, comprising 99.9% of all American businesses. This ruling in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo disrupts the regulatory predictability that businesses depend on for stability. 💼From Main Street to Wall Street, small businesses across America rely on federal regulations to plan and prepare for the future. The overturning of the Chevron doctrine will introduce confusion and compliance challenges that could impact businesses for years to come. 📉The American Sustainable Business Network, representing thousands of small and mid-size businesses, stood united with other small business organizations in warning of the far-reaching consequences for local economies and business operations. This was made clear in an amicus brief filed with Democracy Forward on September 23, 2023. Read the amicus brief: https://bit.ly/3xDKCmX ASBN will continue to advocate on behalf of its members through the notice and comment process and explore legislative action to restore Chevron deference. #SmallBusiness #RegulatoryPredictability #SupremeCourt #ChevronDoctrine #ComplianceChallenges #Chevron #DemocracyForward
