The first cellulosic fire time/temperature curve emerged in the early 1900s as a way to assess the safety and performance of building materials considered modern at the time. Approved fireproofing designs based on that curve remain in effect today. But far from being a testament to the durability of a tried and true testing method, it’s a huge liability: - A wide variety of modern construction materials and are made of hydrocarbon-based synthetics - The same is true of interior furnishings and all the electronic gadgets we accumulate - #electricvehicles and home- and grid-scale energy storage systems are more and more common That’s a recipe for fires that are more dangerous than in the past because they reach their maximum temperatures sooner, spread faster, give off more toxic smoke, and are harder to extinguish. This isn’t a “what-if,” either. The composition and contents of occupied spaces have already been documented as aggravating factors in recent catastrophic fires around the world. So it’s safe to say that obsolete cellulosic standards need to be phased out. But what should take their place? And what might an adoption of an alternative mean for the #fireproofing and #construction industries? The Red Bucket turns to Chris Burst for answers. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gZgPHbCh

In #pharmaceutical facility construction and renovation projects, only all-stars are invited. And the pros at RHI, Inc. knocked this one out of the park: A conversion from offices to a state-of-the-art laboratory included a 40,000-square-foot application of Dudick Steri-Quartz decorative quartz broadcast epoxy #flooring system. Asset design, assembly method, or space and environmental constraints can complicate the process of specifying protective coatings. This is where surface-tolerant epoxy mastics shine. When used as a primer, they do what other primers simply cannot. How do they work? What makes them so good? https://lnkd.in/ge9Peq_z

For specifiers or owners concerned with minimizing environmental harm over the course of construction and for the lifetime of a structure, Kristen Blankenship’s advice is dead simple: Choose the highest performer. Because “green” in composition usually doesn’t equate to green in lifecycle performance. The most sustainable corrosion protection product you can choose is the one you don’t have to reapply every five to 10 years. Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gKnUFX9V

For the United States Air Force, mission readiness matters. It matters as a function of high-level strategy, but also down to the seemingly small details—including the coatings protecting structural steel on bases throughout the world. That’s part of the reason why the specifications that guide coating product selection are as detailed and prescriptive as they are. But what if you know that a certain coating system will perform just as well—if not better than—those that meet the letter of strict government standards? And what if that certain coating system had the potential to end a trend of costly coating failures on military posts in humid coastal climates? Champion Specialty Services Corp. had the gameplan: demonstrate how an alternative system consisting of Carboline products would meet or exceed performance requirements in this environment, and then make the case that approving a variance from the current standard would be in the Air Force’s advantage. Read the case study to see how that went—and what it means for the future: https://lnkd.in/gyZHSTXc

Protective coatings with inorganic silicate binders aren’t new, but methods to assess how their composition and performance influence sustainability are. And the more we learn, the better they look. Just not to the eye. As Kristen Blankenship explains, recent emphasis on reducing overall environmental impact means that the aesthetics vs. performance pendulum is starting to swing away from the bright-and-shiny.
