Last summer, we worked on expanding the Parallel 41 Flux Network. We installed nine new eddy covariance systems in the states of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, which make up the Upper Colorado River Basin, located in the western region of the United States. These systems accurately measure surface energy balance components, such as the latent heat flux used to calculate evapotranspiration (ET), a fundamental variable for accessing crop water requirements, soil water balance, periods of water stress, water productivity, and irrigation water consumption. These measurements are especially relevant in the Upper Colorado River Basin, which is coming out of a 22-year drought. Researchers, water managers, farmers, and policymakers strive to better understand the region's consumptive water use and crop ET to ensure effective water management in the coming years. The installed eddy covariance systems also measure CO2 fluxes between the land surface and the atmosphere, providing insights into whether the studied agroecosystems act as CO2 sources or sinks. These measurements can help evaluate the efficiency and sustainability of current management practices, inform decision-making, enhance agricultural production systems, and guide the development of public policies.

The first-ever (!) carbon flux station at a French vineyard in Burgundy can become a game-changer for the wine industry facing the challenges of climate change by directly measuring sequestration and emission of carbon dioxide, heat, and water losses. During last week’s visit and meetings in Dijon, France, I had the great pleasure of meeting multiple partners making this significant step in their efforts to understand carbon sequestration and emissions in the wine industry.   What is a Flux Station: it is almost like a regular weather station but also directly measures sequestration and emission of carbon, GHGs, water loss, and heat. Why Direct Flux Measurements Matter for the Wine Industry:   1. Direct flux measurements provide precise data on carbon sequestration and emissions, helping wineries demonstrate their commitment to being carbon neutral or even carbon positive. 2. Such data are also crucial for making informed decisions about vineyard management practices that enhance carbon sequestration without reducing yield amount, grape quality, and drought and mildew resistance. 3. An Instantaneous Water Use Efficiency (WUE), derived from direct flux measurements, could become a key indicator of desired water stress. In grapevines, some of such stress is essential for producing high-quality grapes, leading to superior wine. If you've come across any publications, conference presentations, white papers, or websites that fit this description, we'd be thrilled if you could share them with us here via LinkedIn message or at "founders@carbondew.org". Here's what we're looking for: ● Any type of publication, presentation, or web resource that utilize eddy covariance, eddy accumulation, relaxed eddy accumulation, or disjunct eddy covariance. ● Measurements that have been used for practical non-academic applications such as farm applications, forestry, gas leak detection, landfill modification, etc., as well as resources that have contributed to the development of regulatory policies, standards, protocols, and more. ● Ideas and concepts for the measurements to be used for any type of practical non-academic applications. Whenever possible, please send us links to full texts and open-access websites. If that's not possible, regular references are perfectly fine too. We kindly ask you to focus on resources that are directly related to our cause. While we appreciate the broader context, for this project, we're specifically interested in concrete examples rather than hypothetical or philosophical insights. Elle quantifiera les émissions de CO₂ issues de la photosynthèse et de la respiration des vignes. CarbonSpace utilisera cet instrument sur plusieurs cycles de végétation pour valider un modèle d'échange CO2 net mensuel pour les vignobles, intégrant des données satellitaires multispectrales avec des données de tours à flux à l'échelle mondiale. CarbonSpace will utilize this instrument across multiple vegetation cycles to validate a monthly net exchange model for vineyards, integrating multispectral satellite data with flux tower data globally. Additionally, the University of Burgundy will analyze carbon stocks across vineyard parcels, while the IFV will assess carbon balances of various viticultural practices to advise Burgundy winemakers. Thrilled to share our latest publication in PNAS, "A solid scientific basis for nature-based climate solutions in the United States." As the urgency to combat climate change intensifies, effective nature-based climate solutions (NbCS) are needed more than ever. Our research underscores the critical need for a solid scientific foundation to ensure these solutions deliver tangible, long-lasting benefits. Key Takeaways: 🌿 NbCS are pivotal in reducing atmospheric CO2 levels through ecosystem management, but their potential has been limited by a lack of precise, science-based understanding of their effects. 📊 Data and open science are essential. Our work calls for open access to data and improved monitoring protocols to meaningfully advance NbCS research and application. 🔍 We outline novel approaches to improving the science of NbCS, such as a hierarchical network of networks to monitor and verify the project effectiveness, integrating various data sources from eddy covariance flux towers to satellite imagery. 🤝 Urgent need for strategic coordination among stakeholders to align efforts and investments towards the most impactful and scientifically validated NbCS practices. I had the privilege to help host the first ever Harnessing the Heartland (HtH) conference in Lincoln this week. A conference that brought together people from 10+ states and is focused on solutions to challenges we face in this region of the country with regard to #climate #resilience.
