There are currently no FDA-approved topical treatments for squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCIS), a form of skin cancer that can develop into invasive cancer. But this team of researchers is working to change that. In 2021, a group of residents in our GME program, along with faculty and our associated pathology group Dominion Pathology Associates began a study to test whether a combination cream of 5-fluorouracil and calcipotriene could effectively treat SCCIS, comparing it to a placebo in a small group of patients. Today, those residents have become physician-researchers who are continuing their medical careers with us—and the results of their study have recently been published in the prestigious American Academy of Dermatology weekly journal. The study found that 86% of patients treated with the cream for 7 or 14 days had no remaining cancer after surgery to remove the affected area. In contrast, all patients in the placebo group still had cancer. The cream shows promise as a non-surgical option for treating SCCIS, but larger studies are needed to confirm the safety and effectiveness observed in this pilot study.
