We congratulate three of our providers on receiving Virginia Academy of PAs (VAPA) awards 🏆 Dr. David Truitte and Joni Morcom, providers at Centra's Heart & Vascular Institute, were awarded the PA and Physician Collaboration Award. Veronica Rigler, a PA and faculty member at Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency, was awarded the PA Student Preceptor of the Year Award. Sloane Kelly, a Primary Care PA fellow starting with Centra Medical Group Bedford in October 2024, was awarded the PA Student of the Year Award. Last week, the Centra Clinical Professional Development team and the Centra Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning hosted the Central Virginia Association for Nursing Professional Development. Using an escape room, we shared best practices for supporting new hire learning and development. During this exercise, learners connect escape room principles to new hire learning and development related to patient safety and hospital-acquired conditions. Nursing Professional Development Practitioners from health systems such as HCA, Carilion Clinic, VCU, the Veterans Administration, and Cone Health attended this exciting and professional learning event. Thank you to our Centra Clinical Professional Development team and the Centra Central Virginia Center for Simulation and Virtual Learning for going the extra mile and making professional development a fun learning experience!

We are excited to announce that Centra has taken strategic steps to expedite patient care by adopting GE HealthCare's Vscan Air™ CL and Vscan Air ™ SL technology, which will enable healthcare providers to perform ultrasound examinations promptly at the point of care, providing immediate insights and enhancing diagnostic capabilities. Vscan Air technology is an innovative wireless ultrasound system that combines the portability and convenience of handheld ultrasound with the power of app-based connectivity, diagnostic imaging and advanced analytics. As an early adopter of handheld ultrasound, Centra will be coupling Vscan with GE HealthCare’s Viewpoint software to streamline clinical capabilities, saving valuable time across departments where ultrasound is used and helping reduce patient wait times. Effective July 16, 2024, the Vscan Air technology will be used across all Centra locations. This technology will primarily be used in the emergency department, family medicine and transport services, empowering Caregivers to accelerate accurate diagnoses and quickly determine the next steps for patient care. “Bedside ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool, especially in the emergency department, where minutes matter in the care of our patients,” said Dr. Caitlin O’Callaghan, Ultrasound Director for Emergency Services at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital. “A handheld ultrasound device makes it much easier to evaluate our patients more thoroughly so we can provide them with the most appropriate treatment. Centra was one of the 17 health systems recently recognized by Becker's Healthcare for auditing and removing invasive mental health questions from physician credentialing applications. "When health workers are deciding in which state or organization to work, the Wellbeing First Champion Badge can be used to show that a location will not require health workers to answer intrusive mental health questions," the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes Foundation said on its website.
