The City of Redmond, Oregon broke ground on their new public safety facility earlier this year, and it is well underway. In honor of #SustainableBuildingWeek Resilience Meets Elegance: Unveiling the Mt. Scott Community Center Renovation and Expansion This remarkable facility showcases how thoughtful architecture can seamlessly blend functionality, aesthetic appeal, and environmental responsibility. FFA’s design team crafted an experience that celebrates the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer sweeping views of Mt. Tabor, while well-positioned skylights suffuse the interior with natural light, highlighting the warm tones of wood slat walls and the textures of board-formed concrete. This interplay of light and material creates a welcoming atmosphere that connects visitors to the outdoors even when inside. Innovation extends beyond the visible, with a radiant slab heating system providing efficient, comfortable warmth without the need for visible ductwork. This forward-thinking approach not only enhances the center's aesthetics but also promises significant long-term operational savings and improved comfort for visitors. The true marvel of this project lies in its use of mass timber construction. Impressive 48-foot panels serve as both structural support and visual elements. Choosing to use CLT significantly reduces the building's embodied carbon compared to conventional steel structures. Perhaps most poetically, the very shape of the building respects its environment. Construction at Shortstack Mississippi is full speed ahead! Utilizing a hybrid system of panelized, wood-framed walls paired with Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) has contributed to its rapid pace. In just 13 short months, 36 new multifamily units will be brought to North Portland’s historic Mississippi District. Founded by Jessy Ledesma and Anna Mackay, Shortstack Housing provides scalable solutions to middle housing development through prefabricated, mass-timber construction that is customizable to the needs of each infill site. Depending on the lot size, zoning, and community context, Shortstack can shrink and grow to deliver responsive housing as quickly as possible, with a focus on “missing middle”-scale infill development.
