Today is World Food Day, a global call to action in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. Our family centers and food pantries throughout the Archdiocese of Hartford provide food for hundreds of people each month thanks to the generosity and compassion of our supporters. Our food pantry at the Institute for the Hispanic Family in Hartford, which distributes goods to approximately 500 families each month, received a donation of food collected by the Hartford Wolf Pack hockey team’s Booster Club today. Staff from our various programs that fall under the Family Strengthening umbrella gathered this afternoon to say goodbye to Joel Cruz, who is leaving the agency after 12 years. For many years, Joel has been the director of the Family Strengthening programs and the Institute for the Hispanic Family in Hartford, a position that he used to inspire others to connect with clients as a way to improve their lives.  We will miss him at Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Hartford but wish him the best. Our goal is to help people who come to us to achieve success and better lives, and we want the same for our valued employees. Thanks to Waterbury Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. for taking time this morning to tour the three Catholic Charities sites in the Brass City. Mayor Pernerewski and his Chief of Staff Joe Geary first visited our Child Development Center on South Main Street, where our staff cares for infants and prepares older children up to age 5 for kindergarten and a lifetime of learning. The site also helps families with basic essentials and other services to improve their lives. Next, they visited the Francis Xavier Plaza housing program on Baldwin Street, where people and families with a history of chronic homelessness can live after being referred by a state program. Our staff at FXB also offers residents the opportunity to participate in case management with the goal of them achieving financial independence and home ownership. The last stop on the tour was our Behavioral Health clinic on Church Street in the downtown area. Staff at the site explained to the mayor all of the different services they offer the city’s residents and described some of the common causes of mental illness that their clients experience. All three of our programs in Waterbury reflect the overall mission of Catholic Charities, which is to lift people up so they can experience the dignity that we all deserve. Everyone counts and everyone is included at our South End Wellness Senior Center in Hartford. So during today’s Hispanic Heritage celebration, there were cheers and applause for every nationality represented — Spanish speakers and non-Spanish speakers alike. A crowd of more than 75 people filled the senior center’s third-floor ballroom for the celebration and many people were dressed in traditional clothing of their native country or where their ancestors immigrated from. The party began with a parade of 15 people representing different countries entering the room, some waving their flags and dancing to their nation’s traditional music while everyone else clapped or shouted encouragement. Catholic Charities operates two senior centers in Hartford: the South End center at 830 Maple Ave. and the Hispanic Senior Center at 45 Wadsworth St. Both are committed to providing wellness and a sense of community for the area's seniors. Did you know we have a family center in Meriden that offers a childcare program and services to help adults strive for financial independence? The St. Stanislaus Family Center at 81 Akron St. includes a School Readiness program to prepare 60 children ages 3-5 for kindergarten and a lifetime of learning. There are openings and any interested families should visit to apply. These photos show the students and staff on a recent trip to Norton Brothers Fruit Farm in Cheshire. The Meriden family center also provides assistance for adults through the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Case Management program (TANF-CM) and Parenting Support Services (PSS). TANF provides case management to help adults identify and reduce barriers to an improved financial situation. PSS helps families with children 18 and under create a more positive home environment.
