CCH has been conducting presentations throughout September with our residents to discuss Proposition 5 and how it can support building and preserving more communities like theirs. Our residents at Jefferson Street in Napa and Sycamore Place in Brentwood gathered to learn more last week. Our seniors are active, engaged, and civic participants in their communities!

The California Housing Partnership is proud to announce that Gov. Gavin Newsom signed two of our sponsored bills, AB 1053 and AB 2926, today in San Francisco. AB 1053 authorizes California Department of Housing & Community Development to make certain types of state funding available to housing providers during the construction period, thereby saving millions of dollars in interest charges. AB 2926 strengthens the State Preservation Notice Law and should dramatically reduce the loss of affordable rental homes in California. The Partnership thanks Assemblymembers Jesse Gabriel & Ash Kalra for their leadership in authoring these bills, the members of the Legislature who voted to approve them, our partners who helped advocate for them and the Governor for signing them.

In California, Prop 5 will make it easier for seniors and other lower-income households to stay in our communities. Prop 5 will provide communities with the power and resources to build more affordable housing. Learn more at YesOnProp5.org.

Older adults are the fastest growing age group experiencing homelessness in California, with 45% of California’s homeless individuals now age 50 and older. Currently, 96% of CCH's households are age 62 and older. Our residents earn an average household income of $17,265 and on average pay less than $400 in rent. With increased costs in operating affordable housing units, tenant rent and rental assistance averaging just over $1,500 per unit, affordable developers need more resources and funding to ensure all seniors in CA are safely and stably housed.

An increased investment in affordable housing from local governments and the State Legislature is needed to ensure we continue meeting the affordable housing needs of our lower income households in California, including lower income seniors. Without a substantial investment, the shortage of affordable homes will only continue to grow, leaving vulnerable seniors and other groups severely burdened or unhoused.
In the aftermath of state leaders' decision not to proceed with an affordable housing bond this year, our research team took a look at what it would take for California local governments and their housing provider partners to produce the million homes the state is requiring them to produce by 2030. Our analysis shows that unless the state substantially increases its funding of affordable home development as recommended by California's Roadmap Home, California will end up more than 500,000 homes short of the million home goal by 2030.
