The massive storms between March 13 and March 17 left a trail of death and destruction from hail, dust, wind, #floods, #tornadoes and #wildfires. However, the large geographic spread of the events means coverage will be diffused and diluted, especially at the national level. And investment in #disaster recovery in the many impacted communities is critical. Learn how you can support recovery: https://bit.ly/3FB7uXX #CDP4Recovery

What we're watching: A massive storm system moved through the southern U.S. on March 14-16, leaving a trail of destruction from hail, dust, wind, #floods, #tornadoes and #wildfires. Dozens of tornadoes from this system hit 12 states, leaving at least 40 people dead. Also, two #volcano eruptions, one in Guatemala and another in Costa Rica. More: https://bit.ly/4hlagh5 #disaster

Roughly 96% of Haiti’s population is vulnerable to at least two of the region’s most common disasters: earthquakes, hurricanes, droughts, floods and landslides. In addition to vulnerability due to the country’s location in the Atlantic, #Haiti is particularly susceptible to climate shocks because of deforestation: 98% of its forests have been cleared for fuel. Additionally, high poverty levels, gang violence, institutional fragility and inadequate infrastructure make disasters there especially catastrophic. However, global and local organizations are improving Haiti’s disaster preparedness and anticipatory action. The World Bank supports diverse initiatives to help Haitians mitigate disaster risks. Municipal Civil Protection Committees are essential to disaster preparedness in the country. These volunteer-led networks bridge the gap between local governments and communities. Members receive training sponsored by the World Bank on Early Warnings, evacuations, community mobilization and emergency shelter management. When looking back at past disasters, the Civil Protection General Directorate realized that many people did not understand threat levels and color codes, so they simplified their early warning systems and helped create public service campaigns to raise awareness about disaster preparedness. In 2020, Haitian musicians created videos and music to spread critical information about disaster preparedness ahead of hurricane season, reaching millions of Haitians. Join us later today for our #Disaster #Preparedness #webinar. Despite data showing the effectiveness of preparedness and resilience in reducing the overall cost of disasters, we know that a small proportion of philanthropy’s disaster giving supports preparedness. Flooding hit Appalachia hard in mid-February, particularly in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Recovery is complicated due to pre-existing poverty, which means insurance levels are low, food insecurity is high, and many homes were likely in poor condition before the floods.
