We're honored that our CEO Mary Kimball was named one of Five Sacramento Solvers in the The Sacramento Observer. Mary has grown CLBL since its modest beginning. “If you stay a long time, you get the opportunity to solve bigger and bigger problems,” she says. These days, she’s working on big policy issues such as climate change, land access for beginning farmers and supplying food to low-income, immigrant and senior communities. Kimball knows just about everybody in the agricultural sphere and is a connector of people. Our SLEWS (Student and Landowner Education and Watershed Stewardship) Program is growing! We a hiring a full-time coordinator who will operate programming in San Joaquin and Sacramento Counties. This position will work from Lodi, CA with travel within San Joaquin and Sacramento Counties and occasionally beyond. This member of our dynamic team will help teach high school students leadership and workforce skills and inspire them to become the next generation of agriculture leaders and natural resource stewards. In honor of Juneteenth, we are thrilled to share this announcement from our friends at the Ujamaa Farmer Collective. After two years of effort, they have acquired 22 acres of farmland near Woodland, just a few miles from our HQ. This acquisition of land is a huge step in their mission to secure access to resources for the success of Black farmers in our region. The State Budget Act (AB 179) through the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation granted funding for the acquisition of the farmland. This achievement would not have been possible without incredible support from Assemblymember Aguiar-Curry, Senator Dodd, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, Community Alliance with Family Farmers, and the Center for Land-Based Learning. The Ujamaa Farmer Collective is also deeply grateful to the many generous donors to their crowdfunding campaigns who helped them reach this point. There is nothing harder for new farmers, especially BIPOC farmers, than land access. We believe that these are first state funds to be utilized to purchase land for BIPOC farmers in California.
