🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 Thrilled to announce the publication of our latest research article, "Glycolytic Lactate in Diabetic Kidney Disease," from my work at Kumar Sharma's lab at UT Health San Antonio, in JCI Insight! Our study highlights the pivotal role of glycolytic lactate as a biomarker and mediator of mitochondrial dysfunction in DKD. These findings pave the way for innovative therapeutic strategies targeting lactate production and mitochondrial health in diabetic patients. Thrilled to share a significant portion (1/2) from my dissertation work, currently in a preprint and in revision at an esteemed journal. Our study aims to investigate the link between kidney dysfunction and brain health via metabolomics approaches by utilizing both mouse models and human sample analyses. We found that disruptions in tryptophan metabolism due to kidney dysfunction are linked to neurological impairments. Our findings from mouse models were further validated by analyzing plasma samples from individuals with advanced kidney disease, revealing elevated levels of toxic metabolites like quinolinic acid which could be associated with poor quality of life. This points to the kynurenine pathway as a contributing mediator to neurological issues in kidney disease patients. This research marks a significant step toward understanding the systemic effects of kidney disease and opens new potential for diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Thrilled to share key insights from our recent publication in American Diabetes Association #Diabetes! Our study uncovers significant differences in kidney disease progression between male and female mice under nutrient stress, highlighting the protective role of the AMPK pathway influenced by estrogen. In male mice, diabetes exacerbates several kidney damage indicators which are not worsened by AMPKγ2 knockout (KTAMPKγ2KO). In contrast, KTAMPKγ2KO in female mice leads to a loss of their inherent protection against kidney disease. 17β-estradiol counteracts high glucose-induced AMPK inactivation and associated kidney damage in female mice, suggesting an estrogen-AMPK protective pathway. The study also identifies potential metabolic markers related to this protection in females. The findings suggest evolutionary advantages for females in resisting kidney damage under nutrient stress, providing new insights into gender-specific health strategies. #KidneyResearch #GenderDifferences #MetabolicHealth https://lnkd.in/ehMTpvyH
