Center for Schools and Communities Building Capacity. Strengthening Systems, Transforming Lives.
About us
Since 1988, Center for Schools and Communities (CSC) has been committed to improving outcomes for children and families through training, technical assistance, program evaluation, research and resource development. CSC’s work focuses on prevention and intervention initiatives operated by schools, organizations and agencies serving children, youth and families. We work in public partnership with state agencies, federal programs, private foundations, universities and community organizations to support the development of innovative programs in schools and communities. We are recognized as thought and service leaders in these focus areas: afterschool/OST, bullying prevention, child injury prevention, environmental education, equity and social justice, family-school-community partnerships, school safety, family strengthening and support, social and emotional learning, STEM and youth development, among others. Our staff possess diverse backgrounds in education, human services and community development, as well as specialized skills and experience in program development and design, evaluation, grant administration, information management and digital learning. This combination of education and experience enables us to provide customized solutions in consultation and training. We aim to increase an organization’s capacity by offering skill development, new resources, program and policy review and evaluation, and planning. Center for Schools and Communities is a division of the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, a public education service agency. View our community guidelines at https://bit.ly/4hPQmv2.

#ICYMI, from the 2023-2024 #CSCYrInReview: https://hubs.ly/Q030_8Ph0 Expanding services to schools and organizations serving refugees: Pennsylvania’s Refugee Education Program, administered by Pennsylvania Department of Education, assists refugee students and families to assimilate to the school and community in a culturally and linguistically competent manner. In 2023-2024 CSC expanded its services to schools and organizations serving refugee students and their families. Nearly 300 professionals participated in fall 2023 and spring 2024 webinar series on topics such as culturally responsive family engagement for Afghan refugee families and understanding trauma and fostering resilience when working with Afghan refugee students and their families. #EquityInAction #ProfessionalLearning CSC develops and offers a wide range of research-based online and in-person professional learning opportunities, including workshops, multi-session courses, conferences and certifications.

Check out our 2025 #WellbeingInActionSummit Plenary session, “Just Talk About It,” and hear both sides of a youth mental health experience. https://hubs.ly/Q03d9qc60 Young adult speaker Kristen Harootunian experienced significant trauma, including her mother attempting and completing suicide. In her preteen years, Kristen didn’t know how to manage what she was feeling and turned to alcohol, drugs and self-harm to mask the pain. The alternative was facing the issues related to her childhood trauma, and she did not know how to do that. As a result of this she suffered with debilitating depression and anxiety that affected her in her everyday life. After going to treatment, where she learned how to replace her negative coping skills with positive ones, she worked hard to incorporate those habits into her life. Join us April 29-30 in Harrisburg!
