Center For Wellbeing & Happiness Community Wellness Coordinator Jayleen Rosario recently received a Community Champion Award from Dorill Initiative Inc for leading efforts to provide a warming center, a wholesome meal, English classes and more to newly arriving New Yorkers every Friday at CWBH. “I’m really appreciative that this Community Champion Award did not just come from our partner organization, Dorill, but from people that I am happy to consider as my friends. Working with our new New Yorkers (asylum seekers/migrants) has been very rewarding. It has meant the world to me to be in community. As I continue to work on these efforts, I want to thank East Village Neighbors Who Care, a group of volunteers who have made a daily effort to provide an array of services to newly arriving New Yorkers. My vision is that, together, we can continue to provide a safer and comfortable space for new New Yorkers and continue to discover the amazing things they offer to this city.” Congratulations to Jayleen for this well-deserved award and recognition!

Our Program Manager, Kiera Del Vecchio, shared her thoughts around the importance of participatory grant making and her experience on the 2023 Grants Advisory Committee for the NYC Fund for Girls and Young Women of Color! Thank you to the The New York Women's Foundation for inviting our team to take part in this inspiring day.
Our gratitude is overflowing ✨ A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us this week to show your support for gender justice! Together, we examined the evaluation results of the first several years of the NYC Fund for Girls and Young Women of Color (GYWOC) to understand the impact of investing in the visionary futures of girls, young women, and gender-expansive youth of color. The first of its kind in the United States, this fund continues to be a collaboration for change-makers, bringing together a growing group of philanthropic funders to promote the progress of young women of color whose ambitions, voice, capacities and identities have long been dismissed or derailed. A shoutout to the incredible team at the Ford Foundation for sharing their space with us to gather and celebrate this work. And to our amazing lineup of speakers who left us feeling inspired and motivated to continue this fight for equity. Thank you to Kiera Del Vecchio, Aaliyah Thomas (Girls for Gender Equity (GGE)), Erika Chambers, LMSW (GGE), Dr. Danielle Cox (Oliver Scholars), Melissa Mark-Viverito, Mariama Diallo, Beryl Briane Ford (viBe Theater Experience), and Simone Jhingoor (Jahajee Sisters) as well as The Foundation's Kimberley Moore, Camille Abrahams Emeagwali, and Ana Oliveira. Trust based philanthropy is so important to nonprofits engaging in crucial community care work.
This week, our President & CEO Jocelynne Rainey, Ed.D. published the article “Philanthropy Needs to Trust the Real Experts – The People It Supports” for Nonprofit Quarterly. Co-written with philanthropic consultant Dr. Cynthia M. Gibson and Vice President of the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation Lisa Pilar Cowan, the piece explores the real meaning of “trust-based philanthropy” and how the people who are affected most by issues should determine where funding that strives to address those issues should go. A new report from The New York Times backs up what Henry Street sees on the Lower East Side every day: Manhattan has the highest income gap in the country, and low- and middle-income New Yorkers are struggling to get by. At the Settlement's Workforce Development Center, hundreds of jobseekers are coming to find positions with higher wages, reasonable hours, and good benefits. Two of those jobseekers who have found new employment with Henry Street's help are Khadijah Bethea, a graduate of the first all-women Building Automation Systems Training in partnership with Stacks+Joules and Center For Wellbeing & Happiness, and Roger Gunning, a member of our Job Essentials Training (JET) program, and they share their experiences in the article below. Henry Street is committed to helping our neighbors find better jobs and advocating for a city where all New Yorkers can live comfortably.

Important article featuring Stacks+Joules, Henry Street Settlement, & Center For Wellbeing & Happiness Women's Cohort graduate Khadijah Bethea in the The New York Times. I think it accurately represents the challenges faced and the importance of our work. https://lnkd.in/eHbn2CTn How can we not be impressed by Khadijah's strength and determination to provide the best for her family? Working 70+ hours, constant upskilling, incredible grit. She is a natural salesperson and is deepening her technical knowledge as she works tirelessly to position herself for a role in technical sales. She's putting in the work - now it's on us to act. Contact me directly if you need to add her power to your team! Stacks+Joules has placed over 180 graduates into Building Automation industry jobs and paid internships with an average wage of $28/hr. These are great people, with the skills and character needed for the most challenging opportunities.
