About us

As a regional, nonprofit healthcare system, caring for people in the community is not only what Centra does, but it is also central to who we are. We care for our patients like we would care for our own friends and family. Formed in 1987, we are based in Lynchburg and serve over half-a-million people across central and southside Virginia through an established network of facilities and services. We operate four hospitals, five medical centers, a nationally award-winning cardiovascular care center, a cancer center and 15 primary care and various specialty practices as part of our Centra Medical Group. We also offer a wide range of senior, post-acute, and mental health care services. Learn more by visiting CentraHealth.com.

Learn about John DeLong's Journey into healthcare! When John made the leap from construction to healthcare facilities management, he experienced a clear cultural and mindset shift that came with the transition. When working on a construction site, you get to experience the gratification of seeing daily progress made on a project from the day it begins to the day it is finished. In contrast, facilities management never has an end. John explained, “in this role, you don’t see change to the building itself, but you do know that the building is functioning as it should be.” #Centrahealth

August is National Minority Donor Awareness Month! National Minority Donor Awareness Month is a collaborative initiative of the National Multicultural Action Group (NMAG) for Organ, Eye, and Tissue Donation. The goal is to save and improve the quality of life of diverse communities by promoting a positive culture around organ, eye, and tissue donation. Currently, ethnic minorities are in urgent need of more organ, eye, and tissue donors. They make up about 60% of the national organ transplant waiting list but only about 30% of actual donors. Transplants can be successful regardless of the ethnicity of the donor and recipient. However, there may be a greater chance of longer-term survival if the donor and recipient are closely matched in terms of their shared genetic background. #Donatelife #organdonation

We are thrilled to share that Dr. Ron Morford and Dr. Pete O'Brien from Centra's Heart & Vascular Institute have successfully performed the first renal denervation procedure using a Medtronic device at Centra Health! This groundbreaking procedure was conducted on a patient with severe hypertension who required hospitalization. Approved by the FDA in November 2023, the renal denervation procedure targets severe hypertension by utilizing catheters to deliver heat to the nerve fibers in the kidney arteries. This innovative approach has shown promising results in reducing blood pressure in patients who are challenging to treat. Congratulations to Dr. Morford, Dr. O'Brien, and the Cath Lab team for their exceptional work! Special thanks to Donna Sams for her instrumental role in initiating this procedure at Centra. We also thank Dr. Higey and Joni Morcom, PA, for their pivotal role in establishing Centra's Resistant Hypertension Clinic, which helps identify and care for patients who may benefit from this new treatment. #CentraHealth #Cardiology

We are thrilled to announce that Karen Delorey, one of our Centra nurses, was selected as a recipient of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA) Virginians Speak Up for Safety Award for the second quarter of 2024! Karen received this award for utilizing de-escalation skills and providing emotional support for a patient who had concerns with certain aspects of his care. Her willingness to speak up ensured that the appropriate actions were taken to ensure a safe environment for staff working in the clinic and for other patients. VHHA believes employees who feel safe and empowered to speak up with their concerns can do so because of a positive safety culture within their organization. We congratulate Karen for speaking up and the leadership team at Centra Health for implementing a culture of safety that values information from front-line staff to protect patients and staff.
