  • 💔 At £116 a week (equiv. £4 an hour), people on Statutory Sick Pay cannot pay the bills or provide for their families. This often results in people being forced back into work, slowing their recovery, lowering productivity, and potentially infecting others. At the Centre for Progressive Change, convening the Safe Sick Pay Campaign, we are calling for a better deal for all when we fall sick. ✅ If you are an employer that is already going above Statutory Sick Pay to protect your workers with decent levels of sick pay, please get in touch with the campaign's Business Lead, Caroline Reilly (caroline.reilly@centreforprogressivechange.org) 📨 Your support can help the campaign to demonstrate what is already being done in this space to the Government. SME experiences are especially welcomed.

📊 Did you know that the UK's Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is one of the least generous in Europe? With over 1.3 million people not qualifying for SSP, it’s clear we need to do more for low-paid workers who face illness without financial security. In her latest blog, our CEO, Jennifer Herrera, kicks off our new series on workers' rights with an important look at fair sick pay and the urgent need for change. Read the blog and learn how responsible employers can lead the way 👇 t.ly/GTGyI #SafeSickPay #GoodBusinessMatters The Centre for Progressive Change

  • “The Book of Samuel tells us of the duel between David and Goliath, where young David defeats the enormous armoured and armed champion of the Philistines in single combat. Marshall Ganz uses this story as the basis and title of his wonderful exposition of why the UFW's organising efforts with migrant farm workers succeeded where so many others had failed. He argues that it worked because they cared enough, that because they were so committed they worked out how to take what they had and use it to get what they needed - just as David took his sling, stones from the riverbed, and cast down Goliath.”-George Gabriel writes an intriguing piece reflecting on his experiences of organising and movement building. Great piece to read and share👇🏾 https://lnkd.in/em3cs5_k

  • New briefing lifts the lid on the financial difficulty working people face when their sick pay doesn’t pay the bills. A new analysis of the UK’s statutory sick pay arrangements has prompted calls from cancer and health charity CEOs for political parties to back improvements to statutory sick pay; as an estimated 250,000 workers living with cancer have been left without sufficient income to cover essential bills like rent and heating. We have partnered with health charities including Young Lives vs Cancer Leukaemia Care Cancer52 to call for reform to the Statutory Sick Pay so that we have a #SafeSickPay that is fit for purpose.
