I recently captured some footage with my 𝐅𝐏𝐕 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞 of IPAI 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 in 4K at 60 FPS, ending up with 21,000 frames (optimized to 900) and transformed it into a 3D model using 𝟑𝐃 𝐆𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. I trained the Gaussian Splats over 𝟖𝟐.𝟎𝟎𝐊 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 to interpret depth, colour, and structure from every angle, building out 𝐚 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐬, resulting in 𝟑.𝟎𝟎𝐌 𝐬𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐬. Then came the fun part in Unreal Engine, where I experimented with both static and dynamic models. One version stays constant, while the other reacts in real time to light changes, adding even more realism. Finally, I placed the cropped building model into Cesium 𝐢𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞, integrating it into a larger virtual world, though I didn’t dive too deeply into adjusting the lighting there. It’s been a fun experiment, from 𝐟𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐏𝐕 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 to ‘flying’ inside 𝐔𝐧𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 and 𝐂𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦! 𝐆𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 not only captures amazing detail but also creates 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭, 𝐰𝐞𝐛-𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬, transforming a simple scan into an interactive 3D world. #gaussiansplatting #3DGS #Scan #UE5 #drone #FPV

To elevate the look of Cesium apps on the web, we’ve shipped key updates to #glTF rendering over the past few CesiumJS releases, including improvements to the glTF physically based rendering (PBR) material model and tone mapping. We're aiming for more than just pretty pictures—fundamentally our goal is to improve the user's understanding of complex 3D geospatial scenes. https://hubs.li/Q02WqQN20

Fresh off the press, we've been hard at work developing a new digital twin pipeline for advanced AECO visualization scenarios: Explore, Enhance, Experience. This represents a move from files to APIs; from images and video to real-time interactive experiences; from cumbersome optimization to high performance geometry at any scale. Built with the power of the open standard Cesium 3D tiles, the Bentley Systems iTwin platform and Epic Games Unreal Engine, this is interoperable with just about any native 3D file/BIM/4D SYNCHRO format. That, and we also integrated the Google Photorealistic tiles for instant geo-spatial context. More to come! Early Access program available now for testing and feedback! 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐲-𝐂𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫 & 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 In light of the recent Bentley-Cesium acquisition, I shared my thoughts on the significance of this Geospatial 2.0 merger and how it will impact the geospatial landscape. I was grateful when Patrick Cozzi joined the conversation to offer this valuable perspective, clearing up some community concerns. Patrick’s comment underscores Bentley’s continued commitment to the open ecosystem Cesium has cultivated over the years. Here’s what Patrick shared: "I appreciate the discussion. I've been at Bentley almost two months now interacting with hundreds of colleagues - it went by in the blink of an eye - and I've known the brothers and many colleagues going back to 2016 when Bentley was among the earliest supporters of open-source CesiumJS, and open-standards 3D Tiles and glTF. Everything I have seen so far is that the open ecosystem supported by Cesium will accelerate. The only speed bump is my own on-ramping; but, the team knows better than to wait for me. Since Cesium joined Bentley, there have been a ton of contributions to the open ecosystem such as Physically Based Rendering (PBR) materials in CesiumJS; funding for advancements in 3D Tiles for three.js and Godot open-source engines; high-resolution 3D Tiles for Japan terrain; etc. Earlier today, we even started the process of socializing Base Infrastructure Schemas - developed by Bentley - with the open standards community - a clear indicator of positive intent. Keep an eye on the direction; I think you will be pleased." Patrick’s optimism about the future direction at Bentley is both reassuring and exciting. This level of commitment to open standards has the potential to bring even more innovation and accessibility to our field. I'm always interested in others thoughts: What are your thoughts on the role of open standards in the geospatial world? Thanks again Patrick. Exciting times. Interested in this conversation? As a field, we are getting pretty good at interoperable 3D assets - with glTF, OpenUSD, etc. The visuals and animations are one aspect and we are moving towards the big vision of interoperable fully simulated worlds with standardization efforts for physics, behaviors, spatial audio, etc. Another topic to get us closer to this vision is a semantic and hierarchical understanding of scenes so that they can be simulated, e.g., knowing the connection points and building materials of the supports for a bridge. Diego Diaz, Colin Kerr, and team have made a lot of contributions in this area for engineering models, and designed an open-source specification, Base Infrastructure Schemas (BIS), that we are looking for feedback on - what use cases does the community have; where is the biggest need and likely early wins for the ecosystem? We’re going to take BIS in the direction that the community guides us with the long-term intention of moving from an open-source specification to an open standard that complements the ecosystem - which is the same route 3D Tiles went. Join Colin and Diego for a BIS overview and to provide your feedback next Wednesday, October 30, at 11am PT. They are presenting an education session in the 3D Asset Interoperability working group at the Metaverse Standards Forum. The recording will be available afterward and there is more info on BIS here: https://lnkd.in/e4HhfJBp. Let us know your thoughts.
