We are pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Patalano, CFA as the Centre’s new Executive Director and Professor in Practice. Joining CETEx from the Bank of England, Professor Patalano has been a Visiting Professor in Practice at the Grantham Research Institute since 2023. Professor Patalano brings over two decades of public policy experience to the Centre. At the Bank of England, he was head of the Market Intelligence and Analysis Division and directed analytical work for the Monetary and Financial Policy Committees. As CETEx Executive Director, he will set the centre’s strategic direction, chair its management committee, deepen relationships with key international stakeholders across policy institutions and international bodies, and oversee governance, staffing and funding. https://lnkd.in/e6KfGPEy

The EU Omnibus Simplification Package as currently proposed risks weakening corporate accountability, increasing uncertainty and penalising the early adopters in the sustainability transition. As the legislative process towards approval is opened up, the opportunity must be seized instead to refocus on a framework to support companies to navigate risks effectively, write Lea Reitmeier and Agnieszka (Aga) Smoleńska, PhD.

Jurisdictions around the world have already developed and implemented policies to transition to a net zero economy. To maximise the impact and effectiveness of such policies a coordinated policy approach is necessary. Our latest report develops a design approach based on ‘building blocks’ to guide policymakers as they face the challenge of taking financial and economic policy decisions for the transition. What role could sovereign catastrophe bonds play in disaster risk management?   Traditional disaster risk finance tools, such as insurance and reserve funds, remain important, but catastrophe bonds are gaining attention as a specialised option. Interest in their use is particularly strong in developing countries, where multilateral development banks are expanding support for catastrophe bonds. This report by Denyse S. D., Lea Reitmeier and Viktor Rözer aims to enhance understanding of sovereign catastrophe bonds, a type of insurance-linked security, as a tool in comprehensive disaster risk reduction.

It argues that central banks should consider the impacts of nature degradation alongside climate-related factors in monetary policy.
