In observance of Labor Day, there will be no fixed route bus or North Shore Shuttle services on Monday, September 2nd. The St. Elmo/Incline Shuttle will operate from 8 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., the Downtown Shuttle will operate from 9:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., and the CARTA Care-a-van will operate on a holiday schedule.

The Read & Ride Bus Pass Program is extended through December 31! The CARTA-Library partnership will continue to offer area students free bus passes this fall! The Chattanooga Public Library and Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) are proud to announce that the Read & Ride program has been extended through December 31, 2024! Thanks to the popularity of the pilot program this summer, both the Library and CARTA will continue to offer free bus passes to K-12 students when they sign up for the Library’s fall reading challenge. The Read & Ride pilot program launched June 1, 2024, as a new incentive for students who participate in the Library’s summer reading program: Make.Play.Read.Learn. (MPRL). From June 1 - July 31, 2024, 2,166 K-12 students signed up for the MPRL reading challenge, and 677 of those students also picked up Read & Ride bus passes. As of July 26, 2024, CARTA had over 2,800 student bus rides since June 1, and the Library logged over 431,000 minutes read by students! “Everyday this summer, we’ve seen students use CARTA to visit our library branches,” said Dr. Lyn Hunter, the Library’s Youth Services Supervisor. “Even my kids are using Read & Ride! As both a librarian and a mom, I can say it’s been an incredible experience. CARTA gives these kids autonomy while still providing a safe mode of transportation, but that’s not all. They’re also supporting parents and caregivers who may not have the availability or means to get their kids around to all the great programs in Chattanooga.” The Read & Ride bus passes are available at any library location now through the end of the year. To get a card, students or their caregivers just need to register for the Read & Ride reading challenge at a library location, through the Beanstack app or at chattlibrary.beanstack.org. Passes for K - 5th graders will continue to cover the fare for an accompanying adult. CARTA provides transportation throughout the City of Chattanooga. Our SmartTransit team - a collaboration between Vanderbilt University, Cornell, Penn State, UT Chattanooga and Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) is excited to demonstrate and share the algorithms behind our research in multimodal public transportation systems at IJCAI 2024. We recently completed a short pilot in Clifton Hills in Chattanooga . The insights gained from this pilot are crucial in our long-term vision to provide on-demand microtransit services that act as feeders for high-capacity, fixed-route transit services. This innovative approach aims to enhance energy efficiency and equitable transit access in areas with low population density, combining the benefits of high-capacity transit and the flexibility of microtransit. Hampshire and SMART Director Stan Caldwell visited with the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority to discuss the $2M grant received from U.S. Department of Transportation's SMART program. The technology being deployed will, in part, prioritize buses at traffic signals if they are behind on schedule. CARTA has partnered with the Chattanooga Design Studio and Nashville's Civic Design Center to bring Design Your Neighborhood to Chattanooga! Design Your Neighborhood equips middle school students with the skills to address neighborhood challenges like transportation and affordable housing while fostering awareness and understanding of their surroundings. This initiative features a project-based curriculum that seamlessly integrates into classrooms. The projects align with social and emotional learning as well as STEAM requirements, and each includes a community action component facilitated by staff and volunteers. Currently, Design Your Neighborhood is active in Nashville and Chattanooga, partnering with organizations like the Chattanooga Design Studio with projects focusing on sustainable transportation and transit art! Tyner Middle Academy is the third school CARTA has collaborated with to promote transit art! Students from Howard Connect and East Lake Academy have also contributed beautiful artwork to our bus shelters!
