  • Our closing fiesta to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month truly highlighted our district’s commitment to inclusion, learning, and honoring the vibrant contributions of Hispanic and Latin American cultures. For the third consecutive year, CUSD hosted a closing celebration to mark the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15. This year, our schools embraced the month from start to finish, with the Department of Equitable Learning and Support, in partnership with central administration, working together with CUSD’s food vendor, Chartwell’s, the CTE Culinary Arts students under the direction of Chef Harris, Spanish teachers from the language department, English Learner staff, and building leadership. Their collaboration brought creative and innovative ways to celebrate and honor Hispanic culture each day. From mural displays and cultural dance lessons to door decorating contests, scavenger hunts, and culinary students preparing traditional dishes, our district didn’t miss a beat in celebrating the richness of Hispanic and Latin American cultures. A highlight of this year’s celebration was a day-long event held this past Tuesday. The day began with a lively welcome for students as they arrived at school and concluded with a community celebration filled with music, food, dance, and cultural arts displays. We’d like to thank Ms. Bowser, Director of Equitable Learning and Support, and to everyone who contributed to making this month so unique. A special thank you to Chartwell’s, Chef Harris and his culinary arts students, our Spanish teachers, English Learner staff, and all building leadership for their teamwork and dedication in making Hispanic Heritage Month a true celebration.

For the third consecutive year, our incredible community partners, Subaru of America and the Philadelphia Union have come through for CUSD in a significant way— by adopting one of our schools. Last week, Edgmont Scholars Academy (ESA) received a wonderful surprise as Subaru and the Union adopted every classroom from Pre-K to 8th grade. In addition to this generous adoption, ESA received a $5,000 donation, gift boxes for over 40 staff members, and an additional $500 for each classroom to support learning and activities. A heartfelt thank you to Subaru of America and the Philadelphia Union for their ongoing commitment to CUSD schools and our scholars. Your partnership and generosity make a tremendous difference! • CUSD’s Annual Backpack Giveaway Helps Thousands! Our annual back-to-school Backpack Extravaganza was a huge success and brought out more than 3,000 students and families from Chester. Thanks to our partners Making a Change Group, Parent University, The Boys & Girls Club of Chester, and Safer Schools Stronger Neighbors, we were able to give away close to 4,000 book bags full of school supplies to scholars who attend schools in Chester, just in time to start the 2024/2025 school year.  The event also included free food, COVID vaccines and test kits, Keystone Health Van services, children's activities like face painting, a trackless train, and a soft play area, a live DJ and literacy and informational tables. CUSD would like to thank everyone who helped to make this event a success, including Mrs. Averette who did an amazing job coordinating the event, our event partners, all onsite vendors, and everyone who volunteered and donated, and of course to the community members who came out to enjoy the activities.
