We're debuting a new Chicago Architecture Center video series, Design Matters! For our first episode, CAC President & CEO Eleanor Esser Gorski met with architect John Ronan of John Ronan Architects to learn about the stunning new Chicago Park District headquarters building in Brighton Park. The video explores how thoughtful design enhances daily life. Learn about the influence of Olmsted's park & boulevard system on the form and setting of this new civic space, and how bricks, fallen ash trees, courtyards, and metal screens each play a unique role in defining the building. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/g7HJTpEy #Chicago #BrightonPark #architecture #DesignMatters

On December 10, CAC is thrilled to host photographer Sandra Steinbrecher and a panel of friends and collaborators on her new book, "The Salt Shed: The Transformation of a Chicago Landmark." A recent Chicago Tribune article provides a good introduction to Sandra's work, on the occasion of the book's launch: https://bit.ly/3XXeiFW The book is an intimate portrait of the 2-year-plus adaptive reuse project to forge a stunning new entertainment venue from Morton's old salt storage facility. Sandra was granted special permission to embed herself with workers throughout the construction phases, to create this one-of-a-kind photo document. Our panel discussion will delve into the Salt Shed's history and redevelopment, grounded in stories of the workers who made it all happen. Purchase the book at the CAC Design Store or online at shop.architecture.org. Learn more and reserve your FREE tickets! https://lnkd.in/gqt4rUic 📸: Sandra Steinbrecher #SaltShed #preservation #AdaptiveReuse #photography

We're excited to welcome two new members of the CAC Board of Trustees! Both new trustees bring a wealth of knowledge and professional connections that will serve CAC well over their board term, supporting all that we offer culturally and educationally and our mission to inspire people to discover why design matters. Stacey Kern, Partner at Eversheds Sutherland, earned her A.B. and an M.A. (in Slavic languages) at Duke University after which she earned her J.D. at Cornell University. She began her career at McDermott Will & Emery and has done stints at Kirkland & Ellis, DLA Piper, Baker & McKenzie, Paul Hastings, Greenberg Traurig and now Eversheds Sutherland where she is a partner. She is a member of Eversheds Global Board of Directors and the U.S. Executive Committee. Gary Axelrod, Global Co-Chair of Hospitality, Gaming & Leisure Industry at Latham & Watkins LLP, advises clients on many of their most complex and highest-profile real estate transactions and is nationally recognized as a leading transactional lawyer in both the real estate and hospitality industries. Gary also supports community causes by serving as a board member for the Anti-Defamation League, Midwest and assisting clients on a pro bono basis. Also, a big thank you to retiring Trustee Theodore Yi for his contributions and leadership during his time on the board.

On Friday, CAC welcomed design leads on the O'Hare Satellite Concourse One expansion project for an informative and entertaining discussion. The audience was treated to a deep dive into design thinking for airports. Many thanks to Related Midwest's Ann Thompson for moderating, and to Ryan Culligan, AIA of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Juan Moreno of Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA), and Barrett Peterson, RA, LEED AP of Ross Barney Architects for sharing their particular insights on the concourse design process & inspiration. We also learned how the new facility will improve the user experience at O'Hare, together with future phases of the multi-billion-dollar O'Hare 21 Terminal Area Plan. This is one project that demands our attention for its lasting impact on the region's economy. 📸: Francisco Lopez de Arenosa © SOM #ORD #OHare #OHare21 #airports #infrastructure #architecture

We were thrilled to work with architecture firm Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA) and the non-profit organization Arquitina at Chicago Architecture Center events this year. Young leaders joined us for our recent Girls Build! Day, as well as a panel discussion this spring, sharing their insights around building a career in architecture while balancing advocacy work. Women represent 20% of licensed architects in the United States today, but Latina architects represent less than 1%. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month we commend these organizations' efforts to propel Latinas into the profession! 📸: JGMA at Girls Build! A long-time Chicago Architecture Center Trustee and philanthropic leader, James D. Parsons is a steadfast champion of youth and design. As CAC’s Education Committee chair, Jim helped foster the development of CAC’s innovative educational initiatives, all geared toward generating the greatest impact. Though Jim’s Board tenure has come to an end, he continues to support CAC “because of the role it plays in ensuring young people and adults alike appreciate the importance of design and are well-equipped to actualize the communities they want, need, and deserve.” Please join us in honoring Jim with the 2024 Lynn J. Osmond Legacy Award at CAC’s Designing Futures Gala! https://lnkd.in/gexCWR3E
