Take a listen to this new story by Vermont Public about our partnership with the Vermont Department of Corrections. By working with Chicago Beyond, Vermont is reimagining how their family visitations can be more meaningful, reduce trauma for children, and increase Holistic Safety for staff and all impacted by incarceration. This is a powerful move toward humanizing the corrections system and fostering long-term change. Family bonds are critical, even in challenging circumstances. Vermont’s commitment to improving these connections is a huge step forward for both incarcerated individuals and their loved ones. We hope you will check it out and share this good work: https://lnkd.in/gzXCS2yx

Join us on Tuesday, September 24 from 12 - 1p.m. for the virtual panel It’s Not Impossible: How NYC Can Transform Jail Conditions. https://lnkd.in/ei5QyVdY In a city that has long vaunted its accomplishments in making life better for its residents, its jails stand as a startling and unmitigated failure. A reform effort over the past decade, aimed at moving back to better designed jails in city centers, has stalled. Levels of violence are astronomically above the 2015 conditions that a federal consent decree was aimed at curing. Is there any way out? Vital City is convening a panel alongside Columbia Law School, CUNY Institute for State & Local Governance, John Jay College Institute for Justice and Opportunity and NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service to explore the path forward with leading experts on jails, their operation and their reform; Stanley Richards, Jan Ransom, Stan Brezenoff, Jordan Hyatt, Michael Jacobson and Nneka Tapia.
