We are thrilled to announce Avit Ndayiziga as the first Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Global Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the Child Mind Institute, Communicator Fellow, in partnership with the Carter Center.   Avit will focus on the underreported impacts of climate change on child and adolescent mental health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like his home of Burundi. His work aims to raise awareness and inspire action, highlighting the unique challenges young people face due to environmental changes.   This fellowship is one of the six core initiatives of the SNF Global Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the Child Mind Institute, reflecting our commitment to transforming the lives of children struggling with mental health and learning disorders. Yesterday, the Child Mind Institute had the privilege of sponsoring and co-hosting a dinner with the European Brain Council, attended by scientists, medical professionals, and policymakers, including representatives from the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Dana Foundation, UNICEF Mental Health leadership, the Director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Dr. Walter Koroshetz, and Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera of Colorado. This dinner was part of a two-day, high-level Science Summit at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA79), a critical opportunity to advance global brain health initiatives and foster collaboration across science, policy, and society. With over 3 billion people worldwide living with neurological conditions and nearly 1 billion affected by mental health disorders, it’s never been more urgent to prioritize brain health. This event highlights the growing momentum for brain health globally and the immense potential of international partnerships to improve care, research, and policy. We’re proud to stand with these leading organizations in the fight for better mental health outcomes. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue working to place brain health at the forefront of global policy!

The Surgeon General recently urged policy changes and cultural shifts to better support the mental health of parents and caregivers. Parents report more stress compared to other adults, and when stress is severe or prolonged, it can impact physical and mental health. Parents’ well-being is linked to the well-being of kids, affecting their health, learning, and their futures. The Surgeon General’s advisory on the mental health and well-being of parents notes that new challenges like social media and tech, the youth mental health crisis, and the loneliness epidemic, all play a role in some of the stress this generation of parents are experiencing. The Surgeon General urges that through policy changes and cultural shifts, we can help alleviate some of the stress and better support parents and caregivers. Earlier this year we released our Positive Parenting, Thriving Kids series, offering evidence-based information and skills to address these common parenting challenges through videos and print resources. Take a look here: https://lnkd.in/gWERESrp
