Adriana Menendez, discussed the impacts of SB 1718, a new law that invalidates driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants from up to 19 states. When the new law takes effect, undocumented immigrants with out-of-state driver's licenses issued without proof of “lawful presence” are prohibited from driving in Florida. Today, all over the world, we are observing World Mental Health Day. Today is meant to represent a day set aside to focus on mental health awareness. World Mental Health Day was started by the World Federation for Mental Health. Each year, the goal is to bring more attention to the impact that mental illness has on people’s lives, work, and family. Mental health plays a huge role in the stability of communities and countries as well. The theme for this year is “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.” Let’s take a moment to check in with ourselves and each other and question if your workplace conditions are safe and healthy, as they can play a huge role in mental health. Unhealthy conditions include discrimination, poor working conditions, exposure to harassment, and stigma. It is essential for governments, employers, and organizations that represent employees to advocate and improve mental health at work. Make sure you are prioritizing your needs, reach out to loved ones, and seek help when needed. Remember, it’s okay to not be okay, and staying safe—both mentally and physically—matters. Together, we can create a supportive community that fosters mental well-being for all. Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place September 15 through October 15, celebrates Hispanic and Latino history and contributions to the United States. Hispanic Heritage Month started in 1968 as a week-long celebration, initiated by California Congressman George E. Brown, but in 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to a whole month. President Reagan chose September 15 through October 15 because it coincides with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries including: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Chile and Belize. This month serves to honor the rich cultural and history of Hispanic and Latino communities, and create a greater awareness and appreciation of their diverse contributions to American society. As an organization founded on the principal of creative positive educational and medical changes in the latin and hispanic community, this time of the year holds a special place in our hearts. This month, we’ve highlighted Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Peru, Brazil, and Chile, with more to come. There are 27 other Latin American countries that all have a rich and beautiful culture that deserve acknowledgment for their impact on our world. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month to all! Our Fall 2024 Triunfadores Program started earlier this month on September 9th. In this program, we empower and support the education of our community by pairing students with education-trained tutors who mentor them for a semester. We have two different tracks that we categorize children into based on their grade – Track one is for students grades K-7; Track two is for students grades 8-12. For track one students, we offer tutoring for language arts, writing and mathematics, whereas for track two students, we offer standardized testing practice, tutoring for college entrance exams, opportunities to fulfill volunteer hours for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship and so much more.  This fall, we were able to accept 20 local children into the program. For today's Mental Health Monday with CBOB, we are talking about suicide prevention. Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. Although suicidal thoughts are common, they are not considered normal and can often indicate more serious issues. We've provided information on the warning signs of suicide, how to support a loved one, resources, and general mental health resources.

For today's Mental Health Monday with CBOB, we discuss how immigrating to a new place and learning a new culture and language can affect one's mental health. We also provide information on culture shock, tips for adjusting to a new culture, language and cultural adjustment resources, and general mental health resources.

We’d like to extend our thanks to everyone who attended and participated in our Back to School Health Fair on August 3rd! With your support, we provided care to 20 dental patients, delivering 74 different services. Thirteen women received gynecology care, four FIT tests were performed, and five patients were screened for mammogram referrals. Every child who attended left with a back-to-school backpack filled with essential school supplies, helping them start the school year off one step ahead. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and recognize that this success was made possible through our valuable partnerships with local organizations. A special thank you to Equal Access Clinic Network, UF Health Cancer Center, Florida Legal Services, Inc., Rural Women's Health Project, Gainesville Thrives, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Gainesville Paramedicine Program, Suwannee River Area Health Education Center, Chagas Research, and the University of Florida Department of Psychiatry.
