About us

Since 1911, Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children. Ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Children’s serves patients from every county in Alabama and nearly every state. With more than 3.5 million square feet, it is one of the largest pediatric medical facilities in the United States. Children’s offers inpatient and outpatient services at its Russell Campus on Birmingham’s historic Southside with additional specialty services provided at Children’s South, Children’s on 3rd and in Huntsville and Montgomery. Primary medical care is provided in more than a dozen communities across central Alabama. Children’s is the only health system in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is a private, not-for-profit medical center that serves as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) pediatric medicine, surgery, psychiatry, research and residency programs. The medical staff consists of UAB faculty and Children’s full-time physicians as well as private practicing community physicians. Governor Kay Ivey declared September 30th to be #NICUAwarenessDay. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children’s of Alabama provides the highest level of care to our tiniest patients. It is also the largest department in the hospital, with more than 250 staff members. Our NICU is a Level IV unit with 48 private rooms available for neonates and infants. It houses 4 ECMO rooms and is the only unit in the state that provides dialysis for premature infants.

The PT and OT Department at Children’s of Alabama operates with the motto: “Developing skills for life”. Our team is #hiring! Our aim is to assist patients and families in achieving meaningful goals and functional outcomes through education, evidence-based practice, equipment recommendations and innovative treatment. We care for children from birth to early adulthood with a wide variety of developmental, physical, sensory, cognitive, behavioral, and/or functional impairments. We have a large team of staff therapists that are complimented by our team of Flexi Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists. Our Flexi Staff primarily work on the weekends to provide evaluation and intervention for a variety of acute care patients as well as intervention for patients admitted for Inpatient Rehabilitation. Occasional weekday opportunities are available as staffing needs arise but hours during the week are not guaranteed. Acute care and/or Inpatient Rehab experience is preferred for our flexi staff. We expect our Flexi staff to be comfortable working with a variety of diagnoses as well as have a baseline level of comfort working with patients of varying levels of assistance. Experience with adaptive equipment is helpful as well as strong time management and independent clinical reasoning skills. https://lnkd.in/gqjfBiXa

We recently celebrated our biannual Scoops for Service event. Employees celebrating one and three years of service were invited to an Ice Cream Social to celebrate achieving this milestone. Join us in applauding this amazing accomplishment! Children’s of Alabama will hold this event twice a year to celebrate employees as close to their anniversary as possible. The Scoops for Service event is in addition to our long standing Service Awards Banquet honoring employees achieving each five years of service. #ScoopsforService #EmployeeRecognition

Congratulations to Alyssa Noland who was presented the June 2024 DAISY Award! Her nomination read, in part, “Alyssa embodies the essence of nursing and patient care, setting a remarkable example for her colleagues and team members… Alyssa served as our overnight nurse and left a lasting impression as a caregiver for our daughter… Her genuine concern was evident as she attentively listened to the pain management plan and proactively checked in… Her commitment to caregiving shines brightly in her interactions with pediatric patients and their often-anxious parents… She significantly enhanced our hospital experience, for which we are deeply grateful.” Congratulations, Alyssa!
