Congratulations to Alyssa Harris, who was presented with the July 2024 DAISY Award. Her nomination read, in part, “Alyssa is that nurse that you hear or read about in fictional tales – the nurse that goes out of her way for each of her patients every time she’s on shift… She was calm, understanding, knowledgeable, and kind. She listened to us – our concerns, our immediate needs… She understood the urgency, followed correct protocol, and took action to take care of our boy… We, as parents were scared and struggling. Alyssa cared for our son and for us, too, by listening, having patience, and showing grace to a family she had never met… Her calm demeanor and resounding grace brought peace to our family during a time of crisis, and we are grateful for her.” Congratulations, Alyssa!

About us
Since 1911, Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children. Ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Children’s serves patients from every county in Alabama and nearly every state. With more than 3.5 million square feet, it is one of the largest pediatric medical facilities in the United States. Children’s offers inpatient and outpatient services at its Russell Campus on Birmingham’s historic Southside with additional specialty services provided at Children’s South, Children’s on 3rd and in Huntsville and Montgomery. Primary medical care is provided in more than a dozen communities across central Alabama. Children’s is the only health system in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. It is a private, not-for-profit medical center that serves as the teaching hospital for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) pediatric medicine, surgery, psychiatry, research and residency programs. The medical staff consists of UAB faculty and Children’s full-time physicians as well as private practicing community physicians. Our Emergency Department is always finding new ways to be prepared! They recently ran a drill using stuffed animals as patients and volunteers as family members. Hear Drew Payne talk more about the heart behind the drills. #EmergencyMedicine #PediatricMedicine #DisasterPreparedness

The inaugural Pediatric Emergency Medicine Symposium, hosted by the Children’s Emergency Department, was a huge success! Nurses, EMS professionals, and respiratory therapists from across the state learned more about caring for pediatric patients. They covered topics such as asthma, fever and sepsis, trauma and firearm safety, acute abdominal pain, IV access, and what to expect when sending patients to the emergency room at Children’s. Thank you to everyone who attended! #PediatricMedicine #EmergencyMedicine

We are so proud of our team members who recently attended the 35th annual ELSO Conference. Our very own Josh McCrary, ECMO Specialist and relief Primer, presented an abstract detailing the collaborative practice between ECMO and CV Services for the successful addition of an oxygenator into a VAD circuit. He and Laura Turchiano, ECMO Specialist, brought back a wealth of information to share with our team! Way to represent Children's of Alabama!
