  • Yesterday, we had a relaxing day filled with fun self-care activities, contests, and refreshments at our Renew You Event! #TeamCHKD members enjoyed a soothing reiki session in the auditorium, enhanced by the calming sounds of singing bowls. We also held a contest, challenging everyone to guess the number of gnome decorations on the wall—congratulations to one lucky winner, who took home a yoga mat and pillow! We also welcomed representatives from Sentara EAP and the YMCA, who provided valuable insights into the benefits available to our team members, including eight free counseling sessions and YMCA membership discounts. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to making Renew You a success! 💙 #CHKD #TeamWellness #RenewYou #SelfCare

  • In our ongoing commitment to excellence in patient care, we take a moment to honor NICU Nurse Garret Swanger, who recently received the #DAISYAward for his extraordinary compassion toward a grieving family. As shared by the parents, Garret’s presence made a profound impact on their experience. His calm demeanor, respectful communication, and unwavering support provided a sense of peace even in their darkest hour. He created an environment where the parents felt seen and cared for, giving them the space and time to cherish their moments with their baby. Garret, thank you for embodying the heart of #CHKD. Your dedication and compassion remind us of the difference we can make in the lives of others. #TeamCHKD #PediatricNurse #NICURN

James Madison University. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬? How resilient pediatric patients are and how rewarding it is to work with this population. Care for pediatric patients looks so different due to the wide variety of age groups and stages of development, making the externship extremely helpful in getting comfortable treating children. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐇𝐊𝐃? I felt very supported as a student at CHKD. Everyone, including doctors, nurses, and other team members, was very interested in my education and went out of their way to make sure I learned new skills. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in these kids' lives. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐇𝐊𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨𝐰? It made me more comfortable taking care of pediatric patients and caring for not only them but their families. I learned so many new helpful techniques that I use every day at work. I also got comfortable with all the staff here in the ED, making my transition into being a nurse seamless. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐇𝐊𝐃? The program was extremely educational, and I got a ton of hands-on experience with pediatrics. If you have any thoughts about working in pediatrics, I would 100% recommend doing an externship at CHKD and even shadowing other floors to get an idea of how each unit works. I never thought I would have the opportunity to work in a specialty like the Emergency Department. The externship at CHKD prepared me to be a better nurse!
