Choctaw tribal members, tribal leaders, and dignitaries from Oklahoma and Ireland gathered at the Choctaw Capitol Grounds on August 30 to unveil a new sculpture honoring the Choctaw-Irish connection. The "Eternal Heart" sculpture was designed to honor the eternal bond forged between the Choctaw Nation and the people of Ireland. Built by Choctaw Nation tribal member Samuel Stitt, the 8-foot-tall sculpture combines a Celtic trinity shape intertwined with a heart and is specifically placed facing toward Ireland. Meet Associate of the Quarter, Chloe Moyer, Attorney Staff, Durant HQ (Legal & Compliance). Q - Tell us about your journey with the CNO and how it has impacted you today. A - "I met with a counselor at Oklahoma City University during my first few weeks at law school. She had asked me a question that no other counselor had asked me. She asked me, "Do you know where you come from? Because if you don't you may never be able to understand your feelings." Not long after that, I received the Heritage Legal Scholarship from the Chahta Foundation. It was sponsored by Chief Batton and his wife, Angie. In return, I had to work for the Nation for three years. For the past three years, I have embarked on a wonderful journey of learning where I come from. Learning where I come from has allowed me to bring so much of my culture back into my family. It has also allowed me to take actions in my professional capacity that honors and protects our culture and our people. It has ignited a passion of service in me that I hope continues for many years to come. Along with my team, I hope to stand up for our beliefs and against anyone or anything that threatens the land, environment, laws, culture, traditions, the Nation’s right to govern, and the quality of life of the Choctaw people." Meet Associate of the Quarter, Michael Miller, Receptionist Customer Care, Durant HQ (Integrated Services). Q - What makes you proud to be a Choctaw Member and how has that impacted you and your career with the CNO? A - "Being a Choctaw Member fills me with great pride, especially as it allows me to witness firsthand the mission in action within CNO. It's an honor to contribute to the tribe, knowing that my great great grandfather, Ben Carterby, was one of the original Code Talkers and my ancestors who paved the way before me. Working for the tribe has allowed me to play a small role in supporting our members, which has been incredibly rewarding. This connection has not only shaped my career but has also fueled my personal growth, instilling a deep sense of pride in my Choctaw heritage." Inter-Tribal Council announced on July 11 the "Wildlife Management Reciprocity Agreement," which enables Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Muscogee Creek tribal members with licenses issued through their tribe the ability to hunt and fish on participating tribe's reservations. This is a monumental step forward for tribal sovereignty by protecting the respective tribe's sovereign right and authority to manage reservation lands and increase access for tribal members.
