What do you give a King and Queen to say thank you for taking time to visit your community? How can you be unique and still make a positive impact? During King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of The Netherlands visit to our community for NewCold's Grand Opening we wanted to present them with something that was unique, met their goals, as well New Cold's and ours as a community. We also wanted to do something all our citizens could enjoy. We partnered with Henry County Georgia 4-H, Henry County’s UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Extension Office, and Henry County Board of Commissioners Parks and Rec to commission a Commemorative Garden at Heritage Park to mark the first ever Head of State visit in our County’s history. The Commemorative Garden is made up of 12 Geraniums (our County Seat McDonough is “The Geranium City”) and 12 Daisies (The National Flower of The Netherlands) totaling 24 to represent 2024. The Kingdom of The Netherlands and their Government have made water resource and environmental management a priority and a good garden can help in a lot of ways in those efforts. We were also excited to partner with Henry County 4-H as their programs help our youth not only with environmental/agriculture education but many other programs including robotics, public speaking, food science and many others that prepare our youth for the careers they want to pursue. All Geraniums were purchased from The 4-H Club’s annual Geranium Sale. The students who helped also will have a unique project for their 4-H portfolios as they compete at the district and state level competitions. The Garden is in Heritage Park’s Community Garden for all to enjoy. During the Royal Visit The King and Queen were presented a photo collage of the Commemorative Garden which is now on display at The Netherlands Consulate General’s office in Atlanta. We would like to think the following partners for supporting us in this effort: NewCold Consulate General of the Netherlands in Atlanta Georgia Department of Economic Development UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Extension Office-Henry County Henry County Board of Commissioners Parks and Recreation Henry County 4-H Club #choosehenry
