Co-Founder & CEO at Chorus Sleep (YC W21) (We're Hiring!)

I recently did a fireside chat with Kate Milne about retaining talented midlife women. We explored the often-overlooked link between sleep disorders and the "great breakup" phenomenon facing women in the workforce. As the workforce ages and women's participation reaches new heights, we're seeing a worrying trend - the "great breakup." Midlife women, especially those in leadership roles, are leaving their jobs at alarming rates, seeking better work conditions and improved well-being benefits. As high as 70% of women in midlife experience serious sleep issues This can deeply impact their careers and ultimately, their decision to stay with or leave their employers. Kate shared a sobering stat: when midlife women experience sleep problems, they're 31% more likely to become unemployed. To spark conversation, we've started a short series at Chorus Sleep (YC W’21) on this topic and are pleased to share our first post: "Retaining Midlife Women: Addressing Sleep Disorders to Prevent the Great Breakup." It dives into the unique challenges faced by midlife women, how poor sleep affects the workplace, and strategies for creating a more inclusive work environment. The best leaders, like Cory Rose and Stephanie Brazil at TAG - The Aspen Group, are thinking beyond traditional benefits. They are drawing on what's intuitive from their own -- lived -- experience: Prioritizing their teams' sleep health is key to a thriving workforce. Gallup's study backs this up. Their research shows employee retention is 2x higher for well-rested employees compared to poor sleepers. Get the full details on Gallup's study in the latest Chorus Sleep (YC W’21) blog. https://lnkd.in/g5WsdWVf #EmployeeRetention #WorkplaceCulture #SleepHealth #Leadership

I’m the “People” in “People and Things”.

As benefits leaders, we're always on the lookout for high-impact solutions, but how often do we come across an opportunity for a 7-9x return on investment? We all recognize the vital role employee well-being plays in fostering an engaged and thriving workforce. But I believe we have a huge gap in how we support our employees, particularly when it comes to sleep health. I've been blown away by what the team at Chorus Sleep (YC W’21) , a sleep-focused employee benefit, is building. I'm thrilled to announce that I am now an advisor. Gallup's recent findings highlight an important trend: Americans are losing sleep. This revelation underscores not just personal health issues, but a burgeoning challenge within the workplace. Notably, women under 50 years old are disproportionately affected, which ties into significant diversity implications—including the cascading impacts that poor sleep can have on promotion rates, pay equity, and more. At Chorus Sleep (YC W’21) Sleep, we recognize the profound impact that poor sleep can have on both productivity and overall employee well-being. Gallup’s research serves as a motivating call to employers about the importance of prioritizing employee health—particularly sleep—as a fundamental pillar of workplace wellness. We believe that comprehensive sleep improvement solutions like Chorus Sleep can play a pivotal role in addressing these issues. By offering Chorus Sleep as an employee benefit, employers can actively contribute to better sleep habits, reduced stress levels, and improved health outcomes for their teams. Shout out to Cory Rose and Stephanie Brazil at The Aspen Group for their strategic leadership in recognizing the importance of sleep health. Their commitment to prioritizing an inclusive approach enhances both employee well-being and productivity. https://lnkd.in/geYej4Dp  #Sleep #InclusiveWellness #TotalRewards #Benefits #Inclusivity #EmployeeBenefits

Co-Founder & CEO at Chorus Sleep (YC W21) (We're Hiring!)

Experts agree that a key element in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives includes addressing and supporting race-based stress. An important race-based stressor is poor sleep. Research shows that women and Black individuals are twice as likely to experience insomnia and poor sleep compared to men and white individuals, indicating a deeper issue than simple tiredness. These disparities extend to health and workplace effectiveness, contributing to broader inequities in promotion rates, compensation, and more. In our latest Chorus Sleep (YC W’21) blog, we explore the intersection between DEIB and our fundamental need for sleep, offering five actionable steps leaders can take to foster meaningful change. If you’re a leader or a soon-to-be leader, hopefully these findings can help. If you’ve been in the game for some time, I’d love to open the conversation. **What strategies have you or your organization implemented to support sleep wellness or general wellness within the context of DEIB? ** How can we further promote inclusive wellness practices in our workplaces? https://lnkd.in/gGYDTqwT #DEIB #Sleep #InclusiveWellness #TotalRewards #Benefits #Inclusivity #EmployeeBenefits

Co-Founder & CEO at Chorus Sleep (YC W21) (We're Hiring!)

I recently had the pleasure of talking with long-time benefits and health expert Jessica DePhillips. Jessica is an amazing female leader who recently left Mercer after 17 years to start her own firm, Ascending 360. So first, I'd like to celebrate her as an example of women believing in themselves and taking risks. Secondly, I'm thrilled to say that Chorus Sleep (YC W’21) is partnering with Jessica and Ascending 360 to help employees be their absolute best, starting with quality sleep. In our catch-up last week, Jessica mentioned "the wisdom of listening to your body." She told me about a morning she decided to skip yoga at 5:30 AM to get some extra sleep, emphasizing how important she knew it was to how she'd feel and perform later that day. She joked: "What would Ali do?" I laughed and appreciated the nod to our mission at Chorus, but her decision underscores a big shift we're starting to see around the importance of sleep, not just for the individual but within the workplace, too. It's staggering that more than half of us struggle with sleep each week. And while we know how important sleep is, sometimes we need permission to prioritize it. Well, consider this your permission :) Go ahead, listen to your body. Treat yourself to an early night or unwind with a book before bed. Your well-being is a gift to your family, colleagues, and, most importantly, yourself. If your organization could use a knowledgeable benefits consultant who truly understands the value of holistic employee health, connect with Jessica through Ascending 360's website: https://lnkd.in/gEkssQeX You can also contact us directly at Chorus Sleep to learn more about our sleep-focused employee benefit: https://lnkd.in/g2wrH45q Thank you to our wonderful partner, Stephanie Brazil, for introducing us to Jessica!

When we can't sleep, it's tempting to reach for natural supplements. But, often, at best, the evidence is limited or suggests a placebo, and at worst, these aids can be detrimental to our natural body processes. Takeaways from National Geographic's recent article, Dr. Peter Attia's caution on melatonin use (particularly in children), plus a note about sleeping pills, are on our recent blog. https://lnkd.in/gGq63wjS

When our partner, TAG - The Aspen Group, asked employees, "What's the one thing that would improve your productivity right now?" -- the resounding reply was: MORE SLEEP. It's well-known that sleep is vital, but it was eye-opening how a simple question revealed a widespread issue that we often overlook -- many people struggle with sleep, and it significantly affects their work. In our recent case study, we share how TAG framed their employee survey questions to get to the root cause issue for their population. As TAG’s SVP of People Ops & Total Rewards, Cory Rose, shared: “The Aspen Group is laser focused on bringing better care to more people, and in order for us to do that- we have to take care of our team members first. We recognize that quality sleep is a cornerstone of both personal well-being and professional excellence. Everyone benefits from better sleep, so empowering our team with Chorus Sleep is integral to our vision of inclusive care. We not only enhance our team members’ daily work experience but also fortify our ability to deliver on our promise of exceptional patient care for all.” Check out the case study here: https://lnkd.in/gyCciPbt ABOUT CHORUS: Chorus Sleep (YC W’21) is a sleep-focused employee benefit.
