About us
At Communities In Schools, we see potential in every student— and we’re committed to helping them see it too. It’s not always easy. Thousands of kids across the country face overwhelming roadblocks to their academic and personal success. Learning disabilities. Homelessness. Bullying. The emotional effects of trauma. Untreated medical or dental conditions. A lack of school supplies and clothes. We’re in schools to spot and overcome the roadblocks in our students’ way. Our commitment to students brings communities together for them. We start by collaborating with school districts and schools to understand each student’s needs, and deliver resources tailored to them. But we don’t stop there. We go beyond the classroom to work with local businesses, social service agencies, healthcare providers and volunteers, to give every student the confidence to overcome life’s future roadblocks and own their success.

On October 15th, CISLA co-hosted the District 5 Forum at Newstart Housing Corp. in Huntington Park. LAUSD candidates Karla Griego and Graciela Ortiz shared their plans to address the pressing issues facing students and families, with the community’s enthusiasm underscoring their commitment to education. Earlier this month, we also co-hosted a successful District 1 Forum. Between the BD1 and BD5 forums, we gathered over a hundred students, families, and community partners to engage directly with candidates. CISLA is proud to amplify youth voices in these important conversations. Shoutout to Alejandro Casillas from Hamilton High and Alice Garcia from Mendez High for asking thoughtful questions about issues like chronic absenteeism. Alejandro was even interviewed by Univision, elevating his voice on a larger platform! Israel Beltran, also from Mendez High, shared that attending both forums gave him a deeper understanding of how these leaders will shape his educational journey. We're grateful for the support of our partners, staff, and everyone who attended. Together, we’re building lasting relationships that empower students to define their own success. Missed the forum? There are many reasons that prevent students from regularly attending school. Barriers such as transportation issues, mental and physical health challenges, lack of access to clean clothes, and food insecurity are keeping 15 million students across the nation from getting to school. Communities In Schools of Los Angeles is raising awareness on this critical issue with our "Being Present Matters" campaign. When CISLA site coordinators are physically present inside schools, 100% of CISLA students show up and stay school. We work hand-in-hand with administrators and families to provide essential resources that keep kids in school. We are calling on everyone in our communities to show up for our kids, ensuring they have the support necessary to attend school and be ready to learn. Proud to have one of the students we serve at Mendez High School ask a question to the two school board candidates in LAUSD district 5. She asked how to better address chronic absenteeism. Celebrate gains and keep working for progress Los Angeles Unified School District Communities In Schools of Los Angeles (CISLA) GPSN
Education is one of the business community’s top priorities. We’re so proud of the work BizFed leaders have done with Los Angeles Unified School District partners to support today’s students and tomorrow’s workforce. We’re already seeing steady progress. Today, we celebrated the district’s success in closing achievement gaps. LAUSD students achieved the biggest improvement on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) tests compared to other districts across California. Every grade level and nearly every student demographic showed improvement. The district’s “priority schools” saw the biggest gains — meaning local students are overcoming socioeconomic and other barriers to achieve success. Congratulations to LAUSD staff, students, and administrators! Now let’s get back to work.
