CAC has advocated for four decades on behalf of Hoosiers on issues regarding energy policy, utility reform, health care, pollution prevention, and family farms. In order to achieve the objective to protect consumers in Indiana, CAC’s activities include performing research, carrying out public education campaigns, organizing citizens, creating public awareness, lobbying legislators, intervening in utility cases before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, and litigating when necessary. CAC has saved rate payers more than $4 billion in excess utility charges since 1974. CAC's Mission Statement: To initiate, facilitate and coordinate citizen action directed to improving the quality of life of all inhabitants of the State of Indiana through principled advocacy of public policies to preserve democracy, conserve natural resources, protect the environment, and provide affordable access to essential human services.

Indiana is currently the nation's largest steel producer, which means that decisionmakers could have the biggest impact on a sustainable steel market. Automobile manufacturers with factories in Indiana like, General Motors, Honda, Stellantis, and Subaru of America have pledged to achieve carbon neutrality in their supply chains. Indiana steel mills are powered by polluting fossil fuels with no credible plans to become sustainable. At the Burns Harbor plant in Porter County, corporate owner Cleveland-Cliffs must soon decide to either reline one of its blast furnaces or move quickly towards sustainable steel production. Sustainable mills can reduce 95% of carbon emissions and toxic pollutants while preserving and creating new steel worker jobs. Re-lining Burns Harbor means keeping the coal-based blast furnace in operation until 2040, maintaining one of the nation's worst toxic polluters, and putting jobs at risk. Indiana must take advantage of this industrial transformation and act now to ensure its continued leadership in steelmaking. The number of steel jobs in Indiana has already been halved since 1990. If Indiana commits to building sustainable steel mills here, we can ensure that our 28,000 steelworkers have good union jobs while creating new ones.
