On a roll with student engagement lately. Last week, local members from AECOM teamed with Los Angeles World Airports and other AEC companies practicing in the aviation sector to visit middle and high schools in the Los Angeles Basin and promote civil engineering as part of National Engineers Week. Lena Kordic of AECOM - Buildings + Places and I served on separate panels at Hawthorne Math and Science Academy, where we fielded questions about a typical day in the life of AEC professionals, our paths to the AEC field, and our most rewarding projects. I found several of the students’ questions to be very insightful and thought-provoking (and much more advanced than I would have thought to ask at their age). During the same week, Jordan Huynh and Megan P. of AECOM - Transportation visited Van Nuys Valley Charter Middle School and hosted a “basics of engineering” session, where they introduced the students to engineering concepts and terms and followed that with a marshmallow and spaghetti tower building competition.
