U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper joined Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, Aurora City Council Member Steve Sundberg and Adams County Commissioner Steve O'Dorisio, along with city leadership and community supporters, on Sept. 30 to celebrate the $10.8 million in federal funding to reconstruct flood-damaged East 56th Avenue and Hudson Road at their crossings with Box Elder Creek. Over three miles of closures along these two arterial roads since June 2023 have restricted access to critical facilities in the region, including Denver International Airport and Colorado Air and Space Port, and a variety of businesses and residents. The federal funding is coming from the Promoting Resilient Operations for Transformative Efficient and Cost-Saving Transportation (PROTECT) program, which is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to provide funds that safeguard transportation infrastructure for Colorado commuters against extreme weather events due to climate change. The city is grateful to our partners--Sen. Hickenlooper, Congressman Jason Crow and Sen. Michael Bennet, along with the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Denver Regional Council of Governments--for leading the way for Aurora to receive the PROTECT grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is this grant, combined with a strong level of financial participation from the city of Aurora, that is enabling us to move forward with a project that will not only repair the roads but make them significantly more resilient. Construction will begin in 2026. Updates on the project's progress will be posted at https://zurl.co/0hee.

Since September 2023, the city of Aurora has been implementing a strategy to reduce youth violence, called Standing Against Violence Every Day (SAVE). #AuroraSAVE utilizes a proven model that has demonstrated how cities can reduce violence when community members and law enforcement collaborate directly with key leaders of active, violent street groups. SAVE is a focused-deterrence strategy and a collaboration between the Aurora Police Department, Youth Violence Prevention Program (YVPP) and community partners with support from Aurora leaders. Focused deterrence is an effort to intervene with high-risk groups and individuals to prevent future crimes. The city of Aurora’s deterrence efforts focus on reducing gun violence, which has an adverse impact on any community. Our Aurora SAVE strategy has been operational for a year, with the goal of keeping community members safe, alive, and free. If you are looking for support and resources, Aurora SAVE can help.
