What does it take to future-proof a city? In Kokomo, Indiana, it started with a $24 million infrastructure investment that quietly laid the groundwork for one of the biggest EV battery manufacturing hubs in North America. Before construction crews broke ground on the $6.3 billion Stellantis/Samsung battery plants, engineers were already working behind the scenes to solve a much bigger challenge—how to make the land itself ready for sustainable, large-scale development. Flood mitigation, Environmental restoration, EV industry support, Long-term community resilience--Read our latest blog to see how stormwater, sustainability, and strategy came together in one powerful project. 🔗 Link in comments. #EVInfrastructure #EngineeringExcellence #StormwaterManagement #Sustainability #EconomicDevelopment #ClarkDietz #KokomoIndiana #FutureReady

Please join us in congratulating Ronald Pretty, PE, PTOE on earning his Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification! Ron is a Project Manager and Traffic Engineer in our Farmington Hills, MI office, with extensive experience in traffic operations, safety analysis, and signal timing studies. A proud graduate of Wayne State University, Ron continues to grow his career in transportation engineering, bringing dedication and insight to every project. This certification reinforces his deep knowledge of MUTCD standards, crash data evaluation, and mobility planning—and solidifies his role in the field of traffic engineering. “I like that when people see those letters, they know I’m a traffic engineer,” Ron says. “It reinforces my role and my passion for specializing in traffic.” While the certification is administered by the Transportation Professional Certification Board (TPCB), Ron used resources and training from the ITE Michigan Section to prepare—one of many ways we support continuous learning at Clark Dietz. We're proud to sponsor ITE and have several active members across our team. Ron’s achievement reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting professional growth and delivering smart, data-informed solutions for our clients. 🛣️🚦 📖 Read the full story - 🔗 link in comments. #TrafficEngineering #PTOE #TPCB #Transportation #SafetyEngineering #ITE #ClarkDietz #EngineeringQualityOfLife

Turning Old Bridges into New Opportunities This week, our very own Drew Storey, CSSBB took the stage at both Purdue Road School 2025 and Michigan Bridge Week to share the story behind one of the most ambitious trail transformation projects in Indiana – the Monon South Trail. 🔹 At Purdue University Road School, Drew led two presentations: 1️⃣ Bridges of the Monon South Trail – covering the challenges of rehabilitating 30+ out-of-service rail bridges into safe, accessible trail crossings, balancing structural integrity, timeline constraints, and signature design. 2️⃣ Leveraging Regional Collaboration for Trail Success – highlighting the partnerships between local governments, Radius Indiana, community groups, and private stakeholders that made this massive trail project possible. 🔹 At Michigan Bridge Week, Drew Storey, CSSBB co-presented with Jason DeRuyver, PE (HDR) in the Day 3 Bridge Maintenance Workshop hosted by Michigan Technological University. Their talk, “What Do I Do When I Inherit More Than 30 Out-of-Service Bridges That Need to Be Converted into a Bike Trail?” dove into the practical realities of adaptive bridge reuse, including prioritization, safety evaluations, and long-term maintenance considerations. The Monon South Trail isn’t just a bike trail—it’s a blueprint for how communities can reimagine aging infrastructure to support mobility, recreation, and regional identity. Missed the presentations and want to learn more? Reach out to us directly—we’d love to keep the conversation going. Honoring a Legacy Through Opportunity On Wednesday night, we had the privilege of presenting the 2nd Annual Jim Loew Award as part of the Edward J. Cox Memorial Transportation Scholarship, a program hosted by Indiana Section of ITE. This special award was established in 2023 to honor the legacy of our late colleague and friend, jim loew, PE. Jim was a respected leader at Clark Dietz, a mentor to many, and a champion for quality, integrity, and client service. He dedicated over 30 years to improving communities through transportation infrastructure—and inspiring the next generation of engineers along the way. It’s only fitting that this award supports students pursuing careers in transportation engineering and planning. We were especially honored to be joined by Jim’s wife, Sally Loew, as Kevin Hetrick, PE, Director of Risk Management & Safety at Clark Dietz, and Toby Randolph, PE, PTOE, Indiana ITE President, presented this year’s award to Carmen Caserio, a standout student from Purdue University. Carmen earned the top score among applicants for the Cox Memorial Scholarship and exemplifies the leadership, academic excellence, and passion for transportation that Jim valued deeply. Congratulations also to scholarship recipients Nathan Stepp, Rishika Tumula, Kelsey Ellis, Shagun Mittal, and Bohdan Yaroyvi. We’re excited to support your journeys and see the positive impact you’ll make. We are honored to continue this tradition with the Indiana Section of ITE. At Clark Dietz, Inc., the Jim Loew Award and our Jim Loew Memorial 5K Challenge are just two of the ways we continue to celebrate Jim’s memory, his mentorship, and his legacy of building better communities. Thank you, Kevin Hetrick and Jacob Phillips for representing Clark Dietz at this important event. #ClarkDietz #TransportationEngineering #Scholarship #ITEIndiana #MentorshipMatters #EngineeringQualityOfLife #LegacyOfLeadership #PurdueUniversity #JimLoewAward

The session highlighted real-world examples demonstrating how refining these plans leads to better project outcomes. 📌 Utility Coordination 101: An Overview and Updates Utility coordination is more than just a checklist—it’s about strategic communication and proactive problem-solving. This session covered the full process from initiation to completion, including recent updates to Work Plan templates and the 107-R-169. A key takeaway? Early engagement with oversight agents and utilities is crucial to keeping projects on track. A big thank you to Deborah Porter (Clark Dietz, Inc.), and co-presenters, Bill Read (Indiana Department of Transportation), Kristoffer Greenlee (Indiana Department of Transportation), Daniel McMurtry (Indiana Department of Transportation), and Mike Randolph (Parsons Corporation) for sharing their insights!
