The Hitchcock Center for Women helps women on every step of their recovery journey. Eilish Counts, Clinical Director at the Hitchcock Center shares that watching women come full circle in their recovery and return to help other women battling addiction is one of the most rewarding aspects of her job. As the only recovery facility in Northeast Ohio that allows children up to 12 to live with their mothers during treatment, the Hitchcock Center has removed the barrier and fear that the women may lose custody of their children should they enter a treatment facility. Eilish states that allowing children to live with their mothers during treatment helps patient outcomes. The services offered at the Hitchcock Center are urgently needed in the community and their new facilities will increase their capacity to help women embark on their recovery journey. Though her time at the helm of the Cleveland Foundation was brief, she left a lasting legacy in Cleveland. Founded in 1935 by poet and philanthropist Edith Anisfield Wolf, AWBA remains the only national juried prize recognizing books that contribute to our understanding of racism and foster an appreciation of cultural diversity. Anisfield Wolf, who died in 1963, asked the Cleveland Foundation to sustain her passion and vision for the awards through a bequest, which the foundation proudly continues to carry out today. For 90 years, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards have amplified voices that push the boundaries of how we grapple with race and equity, not just in literature but in life, in the pursuit of a more just and inclusive world. As we continue to highlight great works of literature, for the first time in the history of these awards, we are excited to share the 10 finalists for our nonfiction, fiction, poetry and memoir categories. Did you know that Edith Anisfield Wolf established the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards in 1935, 20 years before the landmark US Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education decision? The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards recognize books that have made important contributions to our understanding of racism and our appreciation of the rich diversity of human cultures. She was truly a woman ahead of her time. Active with the Cleveland Public Library for 20 years, working to ensure the library had books from all cultures and was a forum where Clevelanders could meet and debate pressing issues of the day. We are honored to celebrate Edith's incredible contributions to the literary community this Women's History Month!
