🌿Workshop Highlights: Empowering Women in Climate Action: Building Green Skills and Leadership 🌿 💡Did you know that the demand for green skills is rapidly outpacing supply? According to the LinkedIn Green Skills Report 2023, 7 in 8 workers lack even a single green skill, which is crucial for our planet's future. Meanwhile, climate change continues to disproportionately affect the most vulnerable, reducing productivity and destroying jobs (ILO, 2019). In response to these pressing issues, Koushik Yanamandram (Climate Asia) and Kavya Ailawadi (Arthan) led an interactive workshop on the second day of the EquiLead Conference at IIC, New Delhi. With around 30 participants, mostly women, the workshop offered valuable insights into navigating the climate career landscape. 🌱The session explored various types of green jobs and the essential skills needed for these roles. It also examined how climate intersects with factors such as governance, education, business, finance, and healthcare, included case studies, and provided resources to help attendees map out their own climate careers. 🌱The key takeaway was that climate careers extend beyond tech and carbon roles. They encompass diverse fields like justice, communications, poverty, and healthcare, evolving with our deeper understanding of climate change and its effects on the planet and humanity. 👉If you're looking to step into the climate field, visit Climate Asia's website (https://lnkd.in/d4DY62FX) for exciting opportunities: jobs, funding, events, and more! #ClimateAction #GreenSkills #WomenInLeadership #SustainableFuture #ClimateCareers

In a recent article by the United Nations, Secretary-General António Guterres states that crippling heat is everywhere, with billions wilting under severe heatwaves driven by a fossil-fuel charged, human-induced climate crisis. According to the UN, over 70% of the global workforce—2.4 billion people—are now at high risk. The most vulnerable communities are hit hardest. In response to the rapid rise in the scale, intensity, frequency, and duration of extreme heat, UN Secretary-General António Guterres on 25 July 2024 called for an urgent and concerted effort to enhance international cooperation to address extreme heat in four critical areas: ☘ Using evidence-based policies, community actions, and enhancing social protection schemes to address extreme heat risks. ☘Strengthening heat early warning systems and ensuring timely alerts for at-risk populations. ☘Investing in low-carbon cooling: passive cooling, energy-efficient buildings, and phasing out climate-warming gases. ☘Strengthening health systems and implementing public education campaigns about extreme heat risks and self-protection. ☘Expanding financing mechanisms for early heatwave response and improving reporting of heat-related health impacts. ☘Investing in early, locally-led humanitarian responses to severe heatwaves. 🌱 Budget 2024-2025 highlights 🌱 In this year's budget, the government has focused on nine priority areas to drive India’s growth and resilience. These initiatives aim to strengthen agriculture, enhance energy security, improve employment and skilling, advance human resource development and social justice, promote manufacturing and services, invest in infrastructure, drive innovation and research, transform urban development, and support next-generation reforms. Here are a few highlights from the Budget: 🍃Productivity and resilience in Agriculture: Launching 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient varieties of 32 field and horticulture crops and introducing 1 crore farmers to natural farming with certification. The National Cooperation Policy aims to systematically develop the cooperative sector, boost rural economies, and create employment opportunities, with an allocation of INR 1.52 lakh crore for agriculture and allied sectors this year. 🍃Inclusive Human Resource Development and Social Justice: The budget allocates over INR 3 lakh crore for schemes benefiting women and girls, demonstrating the government's commitment to enhancing their role in economic development. 🍃Energy Security: The government is advancing energy security through two key schemes: the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which provides free electricity up to 300 units for 1 crore households via rooftop solar plants, and the Roadmap for 'Hard to Abate' Industries, which transitions industries from 'energy efficiency' to 'emission targets' with new regulations, supported by investment-grade energy audits and financial aid for cleaner energy in 60 clusters, expanding to 100 more. 🍃Infrastructure: Addressing frequent floods in Bihar, including those originating outside the country, by providing INR 11,500 crore for critical projects. This includes the Kosi-Mechi intra-state link and 20 additional schemes for barrages, river pollution abatement, and irrigation, supported through the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme and other funding sources. 🍃Next Generation Reforms: Developing a taxonomy for climate finance to enhance the availability of capital for climate adaptation and mitigation. This will support the achievement of the country’s climate commitments and facilitate a green transition. Climate Asia in collaboration with EquiLead hosted another successful roundtable discussion on Wednesday focusing on “Accelerating Women’s Leadership in Climate Action,” at the India International Centre, Delhi. This marks the third instalment of our collaborative closed-door roundtable series bringing together diverse players in the climate ecosystem. Some key takeaways from the discussion include: 💡Integrating Gender Perspectives: Highlighted the importance of incorporating a gender lens in climate initiatives to effectively scale efforts and prioritize women in climate action. 💡Challenges in Agriculture: Addressed the need for programs specifically tailored to women in agriculture. Key issues discussed included limited access to finance and the complexities of mixed-gender settings. The potential for women-only Farmer Produce Organizations (FPOs) was also explored. 💡Technology and Gender Equity: Emphasized the intersection of technology and climate action. Discussions focused on leveraging digital solutions to address gender disparities and improve climate resilience. In breakout sessions, participants were divided into two groups: Thinkers and Solutioners. Moderators for the session: Satyam Vyas, Anchal Kakkar, Aiswarya Ananthapadmanabhan 💡Thinkers Group: Concentrated on ensuring a fair transition by integrating gender considerations directly into climate action. They underscored the necessity of comprehensive strategies, utilizing technology and AI to analyze gender disparities and enhance efficiency. 💡Solutioners Group: Stressed that effective policies must be based on real experiences and community voices, not just expert opinions. This approach ensures policies are both impactful and scalable. We have been hosting these engaging roundtables in various cities, and the next one might be coming to yours! Stay tuned for updates.
