Among these smiling faces was a sobering discussion on the climate crisis and the urgency of working together for future generations with leaders from around the world. Thank you to Global Ties U.S. and Athena Passera PhD for organizing U.S. Department of State's Climate Crisis Plenary Day; it was an incredible event. After hearing from inspiring leaders like Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Jane Gilbert, who are making groundbreaking strides in policy and climate action, I was able to share more about our ClimateReady Tech Hub initiatives. The conversation challenged us to confront a hard truth: driving climate innovation requires significantly greater political, economic, and cultural will. Truthfully, we didn’t walk away with many easy answers—only the reminder that we must keep pushing forward. As Rosabeth Moss Kanter noted, the middle is hard, and we are in the middle. But giving up is not an option. Volume up! On days like today, I’m grateful for the research and initiatives that will emerge from the South Florida Climate Resilience Tech Hub! Hard to believe, but a year ago this month, the U.S. Economic Development Administration named #MiamiDade county as the lead for one of 31 national tech hubs. This particular hub is focused on #ClimateTech, including #coastalresilience, #marineinfrastructure, #cleancement and #energyefficient building technologies. I shot this video as the eye of #hurricanemilton is making a beeline to my hometown of Melbourne Beach. Hard to believe it’s still more than 24 hours away! As you can see, the dunes are already vulnerable and we haven’t even begun the next 36 hours of tropical storm and hurricane force winds. Big thank you to all the Climate Tech Hub’s #industry, #academic, and #governmental partners, including, South Florida Regional Planning Council, Miami Waterkeeper, Florida International University, Miami Dade College, Florida Atlantic University, Florida Power & Light, Knight Foundation, eMerge Americas, Miami-Dade Beacon Council, Miami Tech Works, and more than a dozen other core partners. Together, we’ll build a more resilient coastal Florida, both protecting us from the ravages of storms like Milton, but also hopefully reducing the intensity of future storms. All the while, this hub is expected to create as many as 23,000 local jobs, and generate $9 billion in new revenue. Creating jobs, building value, and protecting the environment all at the same time? As Florida braces for another storm, we were brought to speed on how the University of Miami and Miami-Dade County are working together to become THE leaders in climate readiness. The #SouthFlorida ClimateReady Tech Hub works with public, private, academic, and philanthropic partners to commercialize and deploy climate tech. Moderated by Eric T Levin , Michael Berkowitz and Francesca de Quesada Covey reinforced the importance of collaboration. Particularly in our carbon heavy and infrastructure forward fields. Grateful to everyone who helped make Opportunity Miami on Energy Efficiency Day an incredible success! The event was so well-attended, it was standing room only! A very special thanks to Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava for her inspiring remarks. Her visionary leadership and dynamic response to our community’s unique challenges around climate sustainability and resilience has driven incredible initiatives like Building Efficiency 305 (BE305) and the South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub. Shout out to my ClimateReady Tech Hub partners Galen Treuer and Terri-Ann Brown whose tireless efforts have helped position South Florida as a leader in #climatetech, creating sustainable, resilient jobs of the future for our community.

🌍🌊 As extreme weather events continue to challenge coastal communities, the work being done by ClimateReady Tech Hub to protect our shores has never been more urgent. During #ClimateWeekNYC, we gathered at JLL headquarters in NYC with leading academics, investors, and government officials to map out the future of green-gray infrastructure and coastal resilience. Special thanks to Michael Berkowitz for co-facilitating this critical conversation with me. Key takeaways from the event: 💡Coordination between federal agencies and updates to local building codes are essential to support new, resilient technologies 💡Climate tech startups in the heavily regulated built environment face a unique "valley of death" and need tailored support to overcome these barriers 💡Future discussions will focus on scaling successful pilot projects—such as expanding from Governor’s Island to the Brooklyn Navy Yard—and sharing clean construction techniques across regions The devastation caused by #HurricaneHelene in non-coastal communities is a wake-up call that our relationship with water is evolving everywhere. We must prepare by learning from places like Miami-Dade County, which has spent years adapting to these challenges, and from Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, who have been doing so for even longer. Our commitment is to scale these learnings and build solutions together. We’re excited for what’s ahead. 🚀🤝
