In a new open letter, EmpiRx Health CEO Danny S. addresses the bipartisan election year issue of skyrocketing drug costs. The PBM industry was founded more than a half-century ago to help manage these costs, but it has not exactly worked out that way. As legislators and regulators increasingly criticize the traditional volume-driven PBM operating model, there’s a growing drumbeat around PBM “transparency” as the solution to the massive problem of rising drug costs. EmpiRx Health is transforming the PBM industry by putting the pharmacist at the center of a clinically-driven, customer-first pharmacy care model. Our clinical pharmacists use AI-powered population health analytics to coordinate the best patient care, delivering significantly improved plan performance and customer results and optimizing member health outcomes. How? In one instance our Population Health Management engine identified that a 37-year-old patient’s medication, Acthar gel, was not FDA-approved for the management of her Nephrotic syndrome. Upon review of the chart notes, our clinical pharmacist found that the patient had seven months of treatment with her previous insurance company but no clinical response to treatment. As a result, our clinical pharmacist engaged the prescribing physician to discuss an alternate treatment, Rituxan, which has shown effectiveness in clinical studies. The adjustment was made, and the patient's symptoms were resolved after the first infusion cycle. This allowed her return to work and resume her normal daily activities. The pharmacy benefits plan saw $482,000 in annual savings due to this single clinical intervention. In one instance our Population Health Management engine identified a 32-year-old patient’s medication as prescribed could increase the blood concentration of that drug, leading to harmful side effects. Our clinical pharmacist assessed the patient’s condition to determine a safe and appropriate dosage and then engaged the prescribing physician to recommend a reduced dosage. The adjustment was made, and potential side effects were avoided. As a result, the patient was able to avoid the drug’s side effects and the plan saw $155,231 in annual savings due to this single clinical intervention.
