Waging justice

About us

We founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice because we believe in a world where human rights are protected and no one is above the law. Justice, like war, must be waged; it doesn’t just happen on its own. So we gather evidence of mass human rights abuses, provide free legal support to victims and work to ensure that perpetrators are held to account. The fight for justice has some difficult foes and we are staring down some alarming global trends. Since it was founded CFJ has grown every year, and now works in more than 40 countries. We are actively investigating war crimes in Ukraine, monitoring sham trials targeting women and journalists and fighting against a global trend of authoritarianism that seeks to punish those who speak truth to power. "We founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice to hold perpetrators of mass atrocities accountable for their crimes, and to help victims in their fight for justice." — Amal and George Clooney

  • Pretrial detention should be a measure of last resort. For the Egyptian authorities, however, it is a potent weapon against critics, journalists, and activists—as well as their lawyers.   Though the government has taken some steps recently—with the “national dialogue” recommending pretrial detention reforms—The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy and Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ) call on #Egypt to ensure any reform conforms with Egypt's international human rights obligations.    See recommendations in the recent report by CFJ and TIMEP—available in English and Arabic: https://lnkd.in/gAknNaXq

  • A powerful instrument that guarantees the rights of African #women and #girls, the Maputo Protocol, turned 21 last month. It has led to many bright spots over the years, thanks to the incredible work of actors on the ground. Here are some recent examples: #SierraLeone passed a law outlawing child marriage under the age 18 without exception and provides paths to compensation and autonomy for survivors. https://lnkd.in/e-Ta3sZ2 After sustained advocacy by a coalition of Gambian feminists and civil society organizations, including our Waging Justice for Women initiative’s fellowship partner, Female Lawyers Association Gambia(FLAG), the Gambian parliament rejected a bill that would have repealed the country’s ban on female genital mutilation, a harmful practice that impacts women and girls’ rights to life, health, and dignity.

  • #TrialWatch has submitted an amicus brief to the Court of Appeal in #Thailand in support of Thai human rights lawyer and activist Arnon Nampa’s appeal of his conviction. He has been convicted of insulting the monarchy (lèse-majesté) and sentenced to four years in prison. Nampa was prosecuted and convicted merely for stating that, if a protest he was participating in were to be broken up, it would be on the King’s orders. The trial court found this statement violated the lèse-majesté law, despite Nampa's explanation that it was to dissuade police intervention. The lack of clarity in defining what will violate the lèse-majesté law is troubling, particularly since Nampa’s speech concerned the King's institutional powers rather than his personal conduct. This is a dangerous expansion of the law that further threatens the right of Thai citizens to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Nampa remains in detention, denied bail pending appeal. He has also been convicted in three other lèse-majesté cases, which carry an additional 10 years in prison, and faces 10 other pending lèse-majesté cases. • Today marks two years since #TrialWatch released its report on the trial of Mexican indigenous rights defender Kenia Hernandez. Despite widespread calls for her release by IM Defensoras , FIDH - International Federation for Human Rights and CIVICUS Monitor, Kenia remains incarcerated in Mexico, nearing four years behind bars. Convicted of aggravated robbery for allegedly robbing two people during a toll booth demonstration, her trial was marred by irregularities and rights violations. Our #TrialWatch initiative, in partnership with the American Bar Association Center for Human Rights, assigned her trial a D grade.
