Sofar Ocean and CNMOC met for the third technical exchange meeting, hosted by Fleet Weather Center San Diego, to focus on real-time observations to support safe ship routing. Topics included the history of Naval ship routing, how observations are used today, data gaps in the global ocean, and the use of wave spectra observations to inform routing decisions. Additionally, some time was spent discussing subsurface currents data and benefits of real-time observations within the littoral zone. #NavalOceanography #ItStartsWithUs #WarfightingWarfightersFoundation #AllAheadFlank

Great work by our partners at Sofar Ocean !! #NavalOceanography #ItStartsWithUs #WarfightingWarfightersFoundation #AllAheadFlank Office of Senator Roger F. Wicker
13 Sofar Spotter buoys were airdropped in the path of Hurricane Helene to make direct, real-time observations of the extreme conditions generated by the storm. The data collected by the Spotters will enable better understanding and predictive ability of hurricane impacts, helping protect coastal communities. The Spotters, which are expected to pass closest to Hurricane Helene later Thursday, have already observed extreme waves, with one Spotter recording max wave heights of 45+ feet. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory Scientific Development Squadron VXS-1 deployed the Spotters in the Gulf of Mexico, along with microSWIFTs and A-DWSDs, on Tuesday, September 24th, as part of the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) Hurricane Coastal Impacts Project (NHCI).
